babs, the dump pipe is the exit from the turbo, the original nissan one necks down to about 2 1/4" and is a restriction. Putting a bigger dump pipe and bigger exhaust allows the turbo to spin up faster and breath better, making more power. Hope this helps?

What john said plus it's prob the best powerup mod you could do to a 4.2td. Mate just had a new exhaust and turbo tweaked to 10psi (he's being conservative) and the difference is amazing. Turned a wheezing slug into a very drivable vehicle.

babs, it hasn't effected my warranty, they would have to prove that it caused the problem etc.

John what would be the cost of changing the dump pipe and exhaust, and who would be most likely to do this mod?

babs, I had the exhaust done locally, about $250, MorwellVic, mates rates, the dump pipe was from ARB Northside in Brissy. I think that a lot more places are doing them now, and cheaper. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Some one on here will have current info and will be able to help you out. Maybe try MTQ, they do them I think? They also have mods for turbo, woo hoo, well worthwhile getting. Hope this helps?

Babs,

Have a chat to a few guys. Whilst my EGT's dropped down a little (which is why i changed mine over), the truck did develop a small lag at takeoff. Only reason I noticed was that I was running 12psi, with a few fuel mods, blanked off EGR blah blah blah. Also check to see what sort of muffler you are running. You don't need a triple flow, just single. Slightly noisier but just helps if you have a 3 inch mandrel bent.

Cheers

Chris.

Hi Babs

I got another post from you asking the Question in reponse to my original post 22890. Sorry but was not able to answer until now. As above it is much bigger cast elbow at outlet of turbo that removes the most restrictive bit of the exhaust. With the exhaust changed as well it makes the car a much better beast to drive in all conditions.

A mate and I both bought same vehicle. He had his cut up and turned into a 6x4 in Dalby so the power lag was a little more noticable. When out bush I was generally one gear higher and alot of revs lower going up inclines after doing this mod. He has now had his exhaust changed (and dump pipe) and can not believe the difference, still raving to me about it after a couple of weeks but we do like to talk about our cars!

Cheers

Babs,

Had MTQ do a stage 2 power up which involved putting a dump pipe on the back of turbo, change turbine inside turbo housing, 3" exhaust (has been done for ages), change delivery of fuel and modify timing to name a few things done, and the drive difference is amazing. Power at rear wheels is 88 kw but the torque is what gets me, mine is like driving an auto. It will most certainly effect your warranty should something go wrong, but as said, they would have to prove it was due to the modification. (more like you prove it wasn't from the modification) All this was done on my vehicle to stop it from overheating, 20 000 km after work has been done and things are all good, but I am waiting till summer to reach my final verdict on the overheating. If you get a 3" exhaust I would certainly recomend the dump pipe at the same time, you would have a bad dealer that stopped any warranty work being done with just the exhaust mods. It could be said you are in actual fact making the engine breath easier with these mods therefore less stress to engine.
I had similar power up done by S@f@ri, when the car was new, but they could not fix overheating with their setup so 3 grand down the tubes. Learn from my mistake and use MTQ if you go the whole hog.
Regards Trevor.
