Plenty Highway

Ian Grose

Can anyone give me any information about "Cattlewaterpass", the road linking the Plenty Highway to Arltunga. We plan to take this shortcut in September and were wondering what the track was like.

Will leave others to comment on the track overall - all I can say is IF there has been rain in the region leading up to your time there, watch out for the "boggy" bits on the plains section, south of the hills section . We fell foul of a deceptive wet patch there a couple of years back. I hope to get back up there soon. Some members here have been along there in recent months - you should get some replies.

Have been along this track a few times in my OKA - last was in Sep 2004. But did it once in our 1976 Kombi.

Narrow, a few sections a bit tricky in that track at a steep side angle, one very steep hill (low range 2nd in the OKA, just OK in the Veedub). Would not want to be there in the wet.

Plenty of places to camp within about 40 km of Plenty Hwy end.

Ian,

We came through there last week after several lovely days at Ruby Gap. It was a great drive. No problems at all. We were towing Ultimates.

There's also a second road that exists north of the Alice. Shorter, very scenic - its clearly marked on most maps. No permit is required - but don't stray of the track though or camp as some of it passes through Aboriginal land.
