Finally got another Patrol....

Gday all,

After many months of searching...well 3 really, I found a patrol in sunny Sydney. Drove down on the weekend and picked it up. Unfortunately, the EFI were to just too pricey for a short term vehicle so I picked up a carby version GQ Patrol TI. All the bells and whistles, straight as, no rust and 185,000 k's for 6 grand. Bit of a bargain really for how clean she is. On the run back economy was a stable 6.7k's/L. Needs a tune and service so hopefully with a nice 3 inch exhaust and extractors, I may even extend that to 7 on the highway. Powerful enough...for the time being.

Want to thank all who helped during my search, and visitor Bench for the run down to Sydney in his mighty patrol. Nothing like doing 2,000 k's in 2 days. I'll post a pici later.

Cheers guys,

Chris.

Chris,

You know I'm always up for a road trip, especially the way the maverick performed...just needed a good run, at the end getting 9.1km/L or for you guys that work off L/100km's that's 10.98L/100km... not bad for a intercooled turbo diesel pushing 33's and 5 or 6 inches of overall lift... i reckon if we'd kept that right foot off the loud pedal i would've got pretty close to making it from sydney to brisbane on 1 tank (90L in the shorties)

One question I'd lilke to ask the forum... do k&n filters really improve performance and fuel ecomony. Has anyone out there noticed any difference on running a K&N???

Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben,
Cant give advice on road cars but i ran a K&N on my VL race car. Was a definate improvement. Lap times dropped and she felt much stronger accelerating. Difference was very noticable comming onto straights and through corners, loosing read end was much easier than when i would try other air filters. Actually ran as good as it did when it didnt have an air filter at all (done for testing purposes only ). If I knew they made one to suit GQ4.2Diesels, i wouldnt hesitate to try one.

G'day Chris,
Glad to see you weren't tempted to go across to "The Dark Side" (aka: Toy-bloody-yota)...hahahaha
I'm sure the GQ will be a great vehicle for you; you certainly got it at a great price.
Look forward to seeing the "fruit reports" as you start spending money on her...
Cheers mate

G'Day Chris :)

I just picked up my second (current) GQ the other day too. A nice, clean white 1995 DX TD42 with aftermarket Dynamic (DTS) turbo. Great truck so far. 10.5L/100km city/highway average.

GQ's have to be the best value for money going. I'm happy!

Cheers

Thanks Truckster & Diamond...

Just before my trip I was getting some work done & Chris and a mechanic noticed that on my last attempt to service the K7n airfilter I'd put too much oil in it & maybe that's why I got bad fuel economy at the start of my trip to sydney... i'm thinking that as the excess oil dried up as the trip went along my ecomony improved... just a thought.

Cheers guys,
Ben

thanks cokeaddict... very interesting about how they ran in your VL. The K&N air filter that's in the maverick is in the pre-cleaner behind the headlight.... next time I might just go easy on the oil next time I service the filter... I'm only running the one filter... when I got the old beast it was already turboed & had a little 300zx intercooler on it... the intercooler set-up was a bit dodge on it so I replaced the intercooler with a 600long x 300 high x100 deep baby & 2.5' stainless pipe work for the intercooler & with a 3inch intake into the turbo, a few other bits & pieces... I'm waiting on my membership for this site to come through, once that happens I'll put some piccies of the beast...

Cheers,
Ben
