looking for good 4wd track at Bogong High Plain area

Submitted: Saturday, Dec 07, 2002 at 00:00

IAMGQ

I am planning to travel to Bogong High Plain area in Christmas for some easy 4wd driving as to test out my 4by.
I am looking for some easy to med standard trek which would not require winch, locker, snorkel etc and good for testing standard vehicle (GQ patrol).
Can anyone suggest some to me? (It would be great if it involves any shallow creek, river crossing)

Iamgq? You are just out of my stamping ground area. Suggest you go to:
http://forums.overlander.com.au/messageview.cfm?catid=6&threadid=2458v
and read that thread. You will find where you can buy proper and correct maps from the CFA. These are a *MUST* have, and everything else is fifth rate. There are also some good links/URL's in that post for the area you want to go to.

I was looking for that map you quoted, but surprisingly I don't have it. Must not be a map that you can technically navigate by. I only have maps that are cartographically accurate. I am a bit of a map junkie, and in particular a digital map junkie. I take my GPS and iPaq *everywhere*.

IAMGQ,
The Bogong High Plains area is more of a walkers paradise, and I suggest most of the tracks listed would be marked as management vehicles only. Looking at the Parks website, track details may help.
I do not travel that area for 4wd purposes, but my maps show a few tracks that are interesting, and would be definitely 4wd. I use a CFA map; this one is region 23 & 24 combined. Cost around $50, must contact the local office in Wangaratta. I am sure locals in Mt Beauty will be able to give some suggestions when you are in the area. There are quite a lot of trails close by towards Mt Bogong and Mt Fainter.
Any water crossings should be very shallow, however terrain will be rocky, good solid tyres will reduce puncture and grip issues.

I also heard about how good the CFA is. Do you know except from ordering from them, is there any place I can buy them in Melbourne Area e.g. Melbourne Map Center, Victoria Information Center ....
If I really need to order from them, just send them cheque ?

there aren't many tracks that are not ok for standard 4wd as they have closed all the good ones, maps are available from the melbourne map centre, just tell them the area you are going to and they will fix you up, you defintely do not need a gps and digital maps to cover the high country.
