V6 hilux fuel economy

Submitted: Tuesday, Dec 10, 2002 at 00:00

Goodsy

I know they haven't been out long but has any one got fuel economy figures for the new V6 hilux. Thinking of buying one but worried they might use as much fuel as the V6 Prado.

Goodsy,

I have a new V6 Hilux. Last fill was 52.85 litres, having travelled 405 kms. This is 7.66 kms per litre or roughly 13.2 litres per 100km.

Since the vehicle is still running in, I have been taking it relatively easily, but I don't expect this to change after it is run in. I also have a canopy that is slightly higher than the roof whch may cause increased consumption. Generally the vehicle is great, my only immediate concern is the lack of range of the small fuel tank. Much more than 450 km, and it needs a petrol stop badly. Will be looking into long range tanks in the future I think...

Out of 52.85 litres, I would get very close to 600k with my Triton 2.8L diesel. Yep, that is correct, as that works out to 11.35km/litre, I average between 10.5 and 11.8 km/litre.

The reason I did not buy a petrol engine. Hopefully my consumption may actually improve slightly once it is run in.

G'day all! Seriously, if you are worried about fuel consumption you probably can't afford it anyway! What's your problems? With 52.85 litres I can travel, oh, lets say about, 322.385km :-( That's my 100 series RV petrol. But it does sometimes puts a huge smile on my face when I cruise up a hill, fully loaded, with the caravan on the back and leave the smell of diesel behind me! :-) If you want power petrol is the way to go, if you want economy then diesel has it by a nose, if you want long term low cost running pertol has it all the way, from birth to rebuild! (that'll spark some debate) Merry Christmas Everyone!

Andrew,

I am also interested in this question as I am also looking at getting a hilux with a canopy, hows the economy going this week?

How about a short review of the V6? I have only driven the Turbo and the Diesel.

Trentski,

I have had the vehicle for two weeks now, but due to work, christmas, and an impending wedding in another two weeks, I haven't been able to get off road yet. Onroad the car is great. I travel around 60kms a day to and from work, which is mainly the Monash freeway on Melbourne. This varies between 100kmh to 0kmh traffic. Economy has improved slightly, with the last tank full being only work/running around the city, and no highway travel. I believe that it will probably be 11-12 per 100km on highway, and upto 14 per 100km during my normal work running.

If purchasing again, I would have a carry boy canopy. They are up to 1K dearer, but match the height of the roof, and fit better. Mine in a Flexiglass. It sticks up slightly higher than the roof, which may affect economy also, but main makes a fair bit of wind noise.

The V6, hmm, reasonable power, but not sure on toyota motives with the exhaust. It has the crapiest manifold I have ever seen, and because of limited room between the engine and firewall, a crushed bend (not mandrel bend) on the passenger side cylinders. I will be looking into a decent set of extractors, and bigger exhaust, as I believe the power a decent power increase would be possible. Also, it seems that revving the engine is quite pointless after 3500 rpm, as it pulls better below that rpm. The best rpm range is from aroung 1500rpm to 3500 rpm. The engine get quite noisy above 3500rpm also. This is also opposite to what one of the 4x4 mags said in their review.

The vehicle I bought is a V6 Hilux SR5 in gun metal grey, I only got he SR5 as the dealer gave me a good deal, only about $3K more than the standard hilux, with the same extras on both vehicles.

If you have any more questions, please ask away.

Appreciate your prompt reply, I have been mulling over the turbo diesel or V6. seems the fuel economy of the diesel will take 120,000 to pay off the ($5000) higher price (based on V6 15l/100km and diesel 11l/100km) but you seem to be getting better than that so payoff would take longer (does my logic make sense?).
I was leaning towards the carryboy canopy based solely on looks but interesting to hear that yours is noisy. Might have to drive one and see how it goes. How much does a carryboy canopy go for? I expected about $2000.

Trentski,

I have read in other places that the turbo diesel can also be quite thirsty at times. Often up to 14l per 100km. I think I read this on the overlander forums, might pay to check.

My canopy was $1700 including colour coding, with only sliding windows on the sides. I was quoted by a different dealer, i think, $2900 for a carry boy, but it was a special that included a ute liner also. Don't know if the special is still available.

I believe that on a decent highway trip, I might get around 11lt per 100km, which is pretty good for a 4x4. I will also be investing in some jerry cans, three will nearly double the range of the vehicle off road.

Cheers

AndrewW sounds like you had a good deal on your lux, who did you deal with? I will be test driving a V6 this weekend (hopefully) as the V6 looks like it will be the cheaper option for the 4-5 years I will own it.

by comparison,
I get 600km off the same sized tank in my 2.4TD Hilux Surf. Now I know this is a totally different car, ie far less power etc, but it is interisting to take note anyway.

I've got a 2.8 diesel hilux with DTS turbo fitted at the moment fuel economy around 11l/100kms always. Just thinking a little extra power would come in handy. Anything upto about 14l/100km would be fine for me as this is what the lux did before the turbo was fitted. Always had my foot to the floor to get the thing going.

I expect the V6 Hilux to use slightly less fuel than the manual Prado ( being slightly lighter ) and even less fuel than the auto. Andrews figures are what I would have expected and sound about right for driving around the city in a responsible driving manner.

Could not find anything but an SR5 V6 Dual cab auto (checked 4 dealers). Exactly what a don't want. I want extra/single cab manual. Drove an extra cab but not a V6.
Was told by dealer not to expect any more Hilux's before mid January and they're probably sold already! Anyone know where I can find a V6 manual for sale?? Going to Faser Island mid Feb and want a new car by then.
PS still haven't decided between the V6 and the turbo diesel either.
