Dash Lights Flickering on and off after long trip

62Cruza

Hi All,

Just got back from a week long trip around Hillston NSW, the first for my FJ62 series, I must say I was more than impressed by how it handled itself off road and in the mud, even with nothing but standard equipment (tyres included).

However when I was driving for long trips down the highway, (more than 100km) occasionally the Air Cleaner Blocked and Battery light flicker on and off together intermittantly. I was unable to to see any pattern for this occuring, such as hitting bumps, changing speed etc. I have checked the Air Filter Sensor and also the Alternator and confirmed that both lights are not being lit due to a genuine fault. These lights are also incidently the two lights which come on then the ignition is on and the engine is not running, so I have also tested the bulb check relay and it appears to be ok. This leads me to believe that it must be some sort of wiring fault somewhere in behind the dash.

My question is has anyone else experienced this same fault before and any pointers on which part of the wiring would be a good starting place. I am trying to avioid dismantling the entire dash if at all possible.

Thanks And Regards,

62Cruza.

My troopy had a fault like that. It turned out that the plug on top of the alternator rubbed on the air cleaner housing and wore thru a wire. It was too hard to fix properly so I just stuck insulating tape on the cleaner where it rubbed - problem has stayed away since (2 years). I have no idea why this fault would show up as it did on the dash board warning lights.

in case someone is wondering, the after market V8 motor has the alternator mounted rather too close to the air cleaner but there's not much one can do to fix that - no room.

Of course, it might be something entirely different on your car but I would start looking for wires or connectors rubbing first, then unplug every connector ( beware of the little 'catches' on them) and check/ clean/ reconnect it. Only after this does not fix it would I look for a broken something.

good luck, it could be 'fun' to find it :-)

Mate ... our's is not to reason why ....

Seems anything can happen with 'em these days, with all the electronic gizmos.

I had a problem with the Fender up the Cape. If I hit a pothole or washout a tad too hard, the hazard lights started flashing. Mind you that may have been an inbuilt extra to warn other drivers I was on the way .. LOL. Had to pull up and turn the mongrel off to re-set everything.

I was talking to the stealer about it on my return and he told me of a Rangie that kept illuminating various warning lights. They had a hell of a job tracing the fault to an interior light globe of incorrect wattage. This little thing was apparently enough to upset the equilibrium of the bugger.

Cheers

Thanks for the input guys, Now that you mention it, the interior globe did blow before I went on the trip, and I didn't get around to replacing it until I returned.

It will be interesting to see if it still does it now.

Well I had the opposite experience!

The blue indicator light in the Jack's air conditioner button had not been working for a few months and I dreaded pulling half the dash to pieces to gain access to the rear of the button.

Went on a trip to the Corner Country. Broke the rear window, the Engine management light came on and stayed on, but guess what?
The trip over corrugated roads FIXED the blue light up. Works beaut now!

So, if all else fails, go for a drive over a corrugated road. Changes are it will either fix it or f**k it for good.

Had the same problem with 80 series T/D Cruiser except all warning lights used to flicker on. The mechanic at Toyota dealer knew straight away that it was a loose connection on the alternator, tightened it and fixed the problem. Hoping yours is the same problem 62Cruza.

If that doesnt work check your fan belt tension on the alternator.

Have you checked your major earth points? Make sure they are clean and shiny BETWEEN the bodywork and cable.... not just on the outside. ;)
