3 ltr td Patrol - how much does engine replacement cost?

Submitted: Saturday, Sep 03, 2005 at 21:14

Ours is going fine, but while my husband is on a mission to spend all our travel savings in upgrading the tow vehicle, just in case the Nissan motor blows - I need to look at some worst case scenarios, such as motor going out in the never never. Might still be cheaper option, than chanigng and setting up another vehicle. We do like the comfort of the Nissan - just that the caravan is really a bit heavy for it - although we have had no troubles so far. Any advice please?

What year model and how many k's?
A suggestion if yours is in the suspect period, write a letter to Nissan with your chassis number and register your concerns about it being within the suspect period. They should issue you with a reference number. That way if it were to go bang you have a starting point. Apparantly new engines from nissan are around 15 grand but major rebuilds are possible.
How heavy is your van?
Hopefully not over 2500kg as that is the max towing weight and if it is over you may have an insurance issue.

Hi 120scruiser - Ours is January 2002 - but by the rule of thumb about checking the tail lights for which model, ours looks like the later one. Its done around 97,000 i think. Being auto, the 2.5 is an issue - the van loaded would exceed that, as the tare on the licence is 2.2 tonne. Trouble is, i've been made redundant in my job, we're getting older, cost of fuel is rising, and holiday savings are dwindling. All of Australia is still out there waiting for us.

Hi,

Look under the turbo. If you see some wires connecting to an oil pressure sensor, it's the later engine.

Hi Motherhen

Trade it or swap it for an earlier or later model 4.2lt diesel. All the bits you have added on can be transferred over. Then you will have nothing to worry about.
