Explorist GPS Unit

hey guys, have a quick question, its prolly already been asked many of times before. im interested in getting a GPS and im pretty keen on the magellan explorist 200, what are all your thoughts about this unit?

im now also looking at the 400/500, once again please give me all the thoughts available to me.

also im wondering if this unit can be hard wired so it has constant power instead of using AA batteries all the time.

another thing is how many routes can be stored on this unit, how many waypoints etc?

im lookin at spendin around $400 so if there is anything that is better then the 200series thats less then $400 please say so and give me some good reasons as to why it is better.

Hello - The eXplorist 200 can save up to 5 track log files, 500 waypoints and 20 routes. The 400, 500 and 600 also have his capacity but with optional SD card you can save as many as you like as seperate files.

The 200 does not have standard external power input but I think some mob somewhere have made an aftermarket cable (not sure of who though). If you can afford it I would recommend 500 because of option to use detailed maps, its additional storage capacity, colour screen plus it has PC download and upload and external power capabilities.

If you ca not afford 500 then maybe 200 is not best option - have a look at the Garmins in Shop on exploroz - I have no experience with garmins so cant comment on how good they may be. What ever you get make sure it has PC and external power connectivity as a minimum.

One other question, does the 200, 400, 500 GPS units have the same compatability in in the way of maps that the standard Magellan Meriden has at all??
I know of a few poeple that have the standard meridien and they have said its a good unit and they also ahve theres externally powered.

Hrrm, so many choices to choose from.

Anyway the eXplorist 100, 200 and 300 do not have the facility to use detailed maps (ie Magellan DiscoverAus Streets and Tracks + Great Desert Tracks and new DiscoverAus topo)..so you are stuck with a basic "basemap" which just shows major highways and towns (except 100 which has no basemap). This may or may not be an issue depending on what you plan on using GPS for.

The Explorist 400, 500 and 600 have the capability to use detailed maps like the Meridians. Nothing wrong with Meridians..and in fact they have more functions (screen options that you may or may not use) than the eXplorists. Recomend Meridian Gold if you are tempted to head down this path. The Meridian Color is a bit sad in bright light. The colour eXplorist (500 and 600) are excellent in bright light.

The choices are fewer if you know what you want or don't want and read the Magellan web site.
