New Hilux fuel economy hassles

This weekend we went from Adelaide to Coffin Bay and back..... During this trip my mate and i compared economy figures...

Me: Nissan GU4 3litre manual @ 110kmh most of the way there and back with a roof pod and roof racks an average of 12.2litres per 100km....(Nissan claim 10.8 litres per 100 @ optimal speeds)... So i am happy with my figures....

Dan my mate: 2005 Hilux single cab tray 3litre auto with no overhanging objects @ 110kmh averaged 13litres per 100....(Toyota claim 8.5litres per 100)... He is spewing...

Has anyone else got realistic figures from their new Hilux's because Dan is going to approach Toyota and complain,,,, i told him to wait and see what answers we get here....

But how does he prove it to them?

But how rude would it be to claim 8.5.... We sat on 100kmh all the way to Pt Augusta and he got 12litres per 100....
Its not even close....
Its even worse than Honda's claim of 150hp from their 2000 Fireblade...

Hi. Well finally I can give some info as i have recieved a lot from this forum.

We drove a new hilux turbo deisel SR dual cab, from Longreach to Darwin and back in July. Actually it was very economical. we were towing a large old swan camper trailer with an old 9.9 johnson outboard attached and loaded full of gear a large dog, 2 adults and one teenager. We were in a hurry and didnt travel slowly. We got very good economy towing uness we went over 110 kms. At one point we did this and the fuel bill climbed faster than the speedo. However generally towing we got 12-13 litres to the 100km ( and that was towing quiet a load).

Friends 4.2 is around 13.8litres as an average...

I got a new extra cab SR5 t/d coming this week and I will be very very unhappy if mine uses 13 litres per 100. Toyota claim 8.5 as an average of city/ hwy(Driven as gently as possible I would guess). So on an open flat road without a big head wind or a large load I would be expecting 8-10 lt per 100km. I have driven 3 demo SR5 manual t/d and the trip computer in all 3 said they were getting about 10.5 - 11.5 km per lt. But who would know if it reads fuel consumption correctly and if the speedos are correct. The local dealer said his speedo reads spot on in his demo( going by the speed checks on the hwy). but he is running 31x 10.5 15 so it must of been out a few km before.

I am putting BFG 31 X 10.5 AT on mine and I will be checking my speedo the day I get so I can work my fuel economy out correctly. I know it takes time for the motor ect to free up but I will have a really good idea within a week of how good it is going to be.

Does anyone know why they still use drums on the back. When a prado gets discs.

Drums on back because when you hit the brakes the front dives, the rear wheels leave the ground - no traction in air so it doesn't matter what sort of brakes you have ;-)

Hi voxson any news on the roof cracking bit you were talking about earlier ( 2005 hilux)? just taken delivery of 05 hilux will be very dissapointed with the fuel figures you mention. freind of mine has s/cab tray back. consistently gets 9 lts/100 even towing loaded trailer. has done over 20,000 kms now.i know the toyota engine is yet to proove it self for relibility. the cost of replacing /repairing 3/lt nissan engine at +100 k would buy one hell of alot of fuel!!

I have got a 2005 SR HiLux Dual Cab 3.0TD Auto with about 14000km on the clock. I've got BFG A/T's, ARB steel bullbar and a canopy fitted. I generally get about 10.5 - 11.0L/100km with a combination of city and highway driving. I don't blame your mate for being unhappy with those figures. Good Luck.

What size tyres. As soon as you change tyres the speedo and trip meters arn't correct. Even with the 31.10.5 tyres I have got 10 Ltres per hundred on the highway and around 12 offroad.

Checked the speedo with a GPS and its out 8 km at around 100 on the dial.

I've had a 3.0 TD since the day they were released. HAve done about 15,000KM.

Before I started to load it up I was getting about 9 lt per 100KM on highway and 9.5 to 10 on mixed driving.

Since loading up with canopy, drawer unit, recovery gear, water container, fridge, bullbar etc, I seem to be getting 10.5 to 11 per 100KM. When towing the camper trailer (1,400KG fully loaded) it seems to be 11 to 12.

But pushing over 100ks seems to make a big difference. Using the instantaneous fuel usage reading on the trip computer (don't know how acurate it is), there is a big difference between cruising at 95 to 100 and 110 to 115. When towing, I now cruise around 90 to 95 most of the time.

Are they standard sized tyres or have they been changed over. This can make a big diffrence to the l Turbo auto's. Turning larger more aggressive tyres has a bit of an effect. I used to run a Prado auto and once the tyres , bull bar, lights fridge etc went in fuel blue out to 15l/100.

I now find my 80 series turbo auto mpore economical.

I reckon the biggest factor is speed. Try it out before you load it up. Do a highway trip at 90 KPH and I reckon you will get close to 8.5. Just not practical in long term. We all buy 4Bs to load them up!!! And most of us prefer to drive at (some a bit over) the speed limit.

Diesel economy is all relevant to revs, and therefore boost, keeping the boot out of it when it isnt nescesary helps, towing a heavy load at over 100kph will allways chew the juice, my Hilux Demo at Toyota never used over 10L/100km no matter how much of a flogging it got around town.

JUST ANOTHER POINT THE FUEL ECONOMY RATING ON THE WINDSCREEN IS AN ADR STANDARD THING, NOT MANUFACTURES CLAIM.
IT IS INDEPENDENTLY TESTED ON A DYNO, SO IT IS NOT REALLY A REAL WORLD FIGURE,
AND IT ALL DEPENDS HOW YOU DRIVE IT ANYWAY.
