Follow up to Tourist missing at Geike Gorge

Missing tourist was found this afternoon by helicopter at the base of a cliff in a remote area it appears there is no sighn of life and police expect to recover the body before nightfall

Probably looking after all of the other 'children' on the tour. Until we know the facts I'd rather not insinuate that the guides were somehow at fault.

With the cowboys who travel from southern states for the 'season' to make a '$' taking the 'punters' into territory that they, as 'tour guides' have minimal experiece with,

OR

with the professional guide who live her and value the lives of people and know that the bush as an extremely dangerous and beautiful place.

Credence should be given to these professionals that they are not in there for the mighty '$', but to share the beauty of what is avaliable in our back yard and and at the rate some of the effin cowboys are going, will not be here much longer.

Before I get shot down in flames - spent time as a Tour Guide, Tour Driver and Tour Coordinator in the Kimberley and have scars to prove it.

Responsibilty for your guests (sorry - 'punters' -[sic]???) is paramount so why are operators and guides not accredited and licenced the same as any other industries associated with hospitality.

Not a bad idea Michael. Might be worth making compulsory for tour operators to supply to tour participants. Initial cost could easily be recouped over several tours/uses. Should be a minimal additional cost to current tour rates.

Even remote areas, could they be hired from police stations and returned to the next police station on the other end of a remote trek.. $5 a day should be enough, would save lives and police a lot of searching.. michael

I still have'nt heard a great deal re the circumstances around this particular incident. An EPIRB won't prevent all of these tragedies but it will prevent some. Unfortunately a lot could have been avoided using simple common sense and an awareness of how easy it is to get into these situations and the possible/likely consequences.

Chriscd has a valid point re the accreditation of tour operators and guides.

In the end though we are all responsible for our own safety.
