Endless air compressor

Submitted: Wednesday, Nov 02, 2005 at 21:21

Brad, W.A.

G'day all, i have a spare A/C compressor out of a holden that i was considering turning into an air compressor like the Endless air jobs. Does anyone know what type of piston rings are used, Teflon? as without lubrication the compressor will seize.

Most compressors dont have rings, the older york units do, what ever you use you must provide some oil in the incoming air. Some endless units have a grease nipple added to lubricate the swash plate. To seperate the oil from the air at the output you must provide a small tank like a gas bottle. Eric

is it a swash plate type or reciprocating?
the york compressor (reciprocating) do use piston rings as said above...and they are steel
i have a york compressor belt driven by a 3 phase electric motor in the shed for some 15yrs...still works ok
they can be mounted vertcial or horizontal......and can be driven at around 7000rpm if needed (but certainly not warranted) as they use ball bearings at front and rear of crank
ford/chrysler and gmh all used these york compressors at one time or another as they were rebadged with vehicle manufacturer......

The compressor is a swash plate type that has 5 pistons. The end cover has the suction and discharge v/v plates. The only identification cast into the body of the pump is S 16.

when I had a swash plate compressor fro pumping up tyres and a big truck air horn I just used to pour some engine oil into it occasionally (just alittle bit). The outgoing air was plumbed into a tank and then through a dryer before it was fed into the tyres. I'd just drain the tank and dryer and pour it back into the compressor every now and then. worked that way for about ten years. no mods done to the compressor at all.
