Opinions please - GPS decision made..I think

Submitted: Thursday, Nov 03, 2005 at 12:52

Brad

I have been trying to work out the best alternative for me with regards to GPS units. Not only do I want one that I can plot waypoints etc and use exploroz software, but I want to use it as a voice prompt street navigator. I am thinking of getting a Navman 520 for main road use etc as it uses memory cards and I can also download U.S.A. maps as I go there regularly. I was also going to get a Garmin E-trex that I could use 1/ as a gps receiver that I could plug into my laptop but also am able to plot with it as well.
Cheers
Brad

Brad.

Check that it actually can display your Latitude and Longitude. Some of the voice navigators do not do this. Knowing your lat and long can be important in remote areas if an emergency eventuates.

Hey Brad

I use a HP6365 IPAQ with a HP bluetooth GPS Receiver. I use Destinator which is the voice prompt turn by turn software and I use Oziexplorer for bush maps.

Hi Brad,

Not that I know what is the perfect way do have any setup, as everyone has different requirements, but I decided to set mine up as follows:

- 2nd hand Laptop (approx $800)
- GPS mouse (approx $70 from ebay via hong kong)
- Oziexplorer software (approx $???)
- Natmap Raster Maps (approx $100)
- Other various maps (approx $500)
- Co-pilot Navigation software (approx $450)

I decidedon the above setup because I wanted the following requirments

- Big screen to view everything
- Track logs and moving map option when 4x4ing
- View current location using various maps as required
- Street navigation with Co-pilot
- Lets me watch dvd's
- Lets me download digital photo's and video during trips
- Negative comment is passenger has to hold laptop during trips

The only comment I can make is make sure you have all future needs thought of, as setup you go with will change depending on your requirements.

Other than that, go for it, it is great to have gps and what it offers

Thanks

TonyG

Destinator self instals into the PDA memory, not the card, but the maps go on the card, about 110meg for all of australia. Piece of cake

CoPilot Live also installs to the PDA memory but i have succesfully moved it to the SD card in my iPaq 4700 and it runs well. You can probably move Destinator as well...Anyone tried?
