snorkel air ram effect

Submitted: Thursday, Jan 02, 2003 at 00:00

Goodsy

Will I notice any difference in power, fuel econmey if I fit a precleaner to the snorkel of my turbo diesel? Does getting rid of the "air ram effect" make that much difference? Anyone fitted one, are they worth it?

Do you mean the donaldson pre cleaner ? I have the air ram scoop and a pre filter for my patrol. The air ram is good on the road above say 60kph. The pre cleaner is good off road in dusty conditions and below 60kph. any faster and the dirt just comes through with the air.I find the pre cleaner restricts the air flow on road and uses more fuel to keep the car at the same speed.

Goodsy I think you can expect a reduction in both power and fuel economy but neither will be a huge difference.

Hi Goodsy, have a pre cleaner on my diesal patrol and have not noticed any difference in power or fuel, but have noticed i dont have to clean the first filter as much as the ram scoop. I run my pre cleaner all the time, and the only thing i have noticed is in heavy rain the bowl fills with water and that is with speeds above 60- 80 ks so may be the above comments arnt quite correct. Have done a lot of dirt and dusty driving and swear by them. Col

Have just bought a 1999 sr5 turbo diesel and was thinking of fitting the precleaner to the snorkel so I wouldn't have to buy air filters as often. Had a finer filter on the last Hilux, did save me money but was a pain in the ass to clean don't want to use one again.
Don't like the idea of the precleaner filling up with water in rain though.

better the pre cleaner catching the water than it going through the system. I also have finer filters and have found i dont have to clean them as much. Col

I used my pre-cleaner to hide a spare key. By the time I got to Coober-Pedy the thing had ground itself to a point while spinning around and rubbing against the sand and bull-dust! Cheers Royce
