Patrol water pump verse Holden VL water pump.

Hi,

I have a 91 Nissan Patrol with the 3.0 litre RB30S motor (carby version). The water pump is leaking and I'm trying to find out if the water pump for the VL Commodore (with the RB30E) motor would be the same. I'm pretty sure it will bolt on but is it the same flow rate etc. The price difference makes it worth while to swap but not if it's the wrong flow rate etc. Any help appreciated.

Ray from my days in the auto game, I think they are identical in body but the flange where the fan bolts on is different. Just check on both and see. Please post back and tell us so we know next time sombody asks. Flow rate would not be an issue, car water pumps are so basic in design. The thermostat is what controls the volume flow.
If you get a GMB brand water pump, just look up the catologue and see if they list the same pump for both vehicles.

Ray , i also have the same patrol as you , just did a water pump on mine , and know what you mean about the price difference . The pump is identical apart from where the timing belt cover bolts to , i used a pump from the VL and modified my covers accordingly , i used part of the VL cover and part of the patrol cover, with a mig welder and a little bit of imagination its not that hard , if you need any further advice email me at .....borgy@ihug.com.au , and i'll give you my phone number , hope i have been able to help out a bit .....Cheers and happy travelling

Just wondering how many km's your RB30's did before the water pump needed replacing?

I've got a 95 model RB30 that's done 265,000km and would like to be prepared for any potential problems - although I must say I've had a great run with mine so far, only prob was a warped exhaust manifold (replaced with extractors - so it was a blessing), a leaking inlet manifold gasket and a seized vacuum advance. Not bad for 4.5 years and 130,000 km.

Hi Nigel , my patrol had done 200000 km's before i needed to replace it. Also at the same time i rebuilt the gearbox , front bearing was stuffed , so i decided i'd replace every bearing in it , done the job myself and saved about $1000.00 , buggered if i know why mechanics can charge such elaborate prices , also just had the rear diff reco'd , heading off on an around Aust trip on the 20th jan , so i thought i'd better make sure everything is up to scratch .............Cheers and happy travelling

Mine has done 230,000 km and is a 91 model. The bearing is still ok and it pumps but it's got a small weep through the seal. So far all I've had to do is minor stuff- resleeve brake and clutch master cylinders, replace front engine mount and a couple of pannel cracks below the battery carrier.
