Portable Coolers

Hello all,

I am looking for some advice... I want to get a portable powered cooler to take on day trips etc (about 20L cap.). Both Waeco and Evakool have similar models in this range.

Has anyone had any experience with any of these? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Shannon, I have a 18lt Waeco, not bad but thin on insulation. Not real good in high ambient temps, but is compressor model so as long as battery holds out it will cool. Hope this helps.

Not a lot of difference between the two, but if you are using it on bad roads or 4WD, the evaKool one does use the IndelB suspension system on the compressor which is acknowledged by Danfoss as the superior compressor suspension system.

Are you talking about the compressor driven ones (dear) or the peltier type ones (cheap)? If the latter I've got one for sale (works great when the temp is below 30 degrees). We upgraded to the 68 litre evakool compressor fridge/freezer coz I liked the insulation on their fridges.

The one for sale is a Tropicool Classic 36 litre - we want about $150 for it. It kept drinks nicely cold in cooler part of the year, but living in the tropics forced us to upgrade.

This morning the outside temperature was 25*C and the inside temp. was 1*C. I'm impressed.
It will hold a bottle of wine laid from bottom corner to top opposite corner and a couple of cans or stubbies, or ten cans, or about six stubbies but you have to dissasemble the six pack-just won't fit assembled.

Would be really interested in how it performs with much higher ambient temps. If you feel so inclined could you keep us informed.
As a note it's currently 46 degrees outside here in Port Hedland but I don't need fridge/cooler to perform in conditions anywhere near that oppresive as unless I'm working I won't go outside at all. Somewhere around the 35 mark I suppose.
I STILL wouldn't mind one of them things in blue though regardless of ambient temp !

What are the dimensions of the cooler (not the girl, they were pretty obvious). I've sorta looked at these but have never found one in store. If they fit they'd be ideal as a centre console for the troopy.

Shannon, I've researched a few of these and Waeco are the only ones that provide a cooler that pulls down to 30 below outside temps, and that is the 36l model. All the others only pull down 20 below.

I think the RRP for the 36l model is $275.

That would be my choice of a Non-compressor cooler.

I'm in Brisbane and we don't get many very hot days, only very humid. I'll set it up in the car and leave it in the sun on a hot day and get back to you. Most of the time I will be using it on trips with the air conditioning on so my test at 25*C ambient is probably relevent.

I picked her up yesterday arvo and took her home, but I got into so much trouble I had to take her back. I even promised to leave her downstairs with the camping gear and only use her when we go camping. Women can be so distrustful.

I'll get back to you with the dimensions, but I'm sure that it will fit between bucket seats or on the center half of the "one and a half" seats of the HJ/FJ60's. They are also designed to be held in place by a seat belt.
