Diff Locks

I have seen the value of a front diff lock whilst climbing a undulating steep hill..... but are they a hinderance if they are engaged whilst tackling a sand dune and trying to keep on a tight line?... Because the car is fishtailing so much?

If you get air lockers, you can turn them off.. Detroits, and lockrites that are always engaged are a PITA....

Lockers are nearly always an advantage... NEARLY... Front end with locker greasy up hill can pull the front end around.

In sand, driver ability is always in question, as for fishtailing, Dont see why it would anymore than normal 4wd...

Pain in the ass Ray91. Unless Truckster found a new type of locker on the market. Agree totally with Truckster on this one. If you have the power down, diff locked, no choice. Arb air locker better option.

I have a lockrite in the front diff and have no problems on sand.Usually on soft boggy sand or deep ruts in sand press the go pedal a bit more and the front pulls the car along or out of the ruts.I dont know about the fishtailing, does not happen. Ray

Ok... Forget about the fishtailing bit. I said that because when trying to mount sand dunes with a small trail and sharp corners it is hard enough to keep on the trail without any weird stuff happening in the front end. But it sounds like a locker doesnt cause any priblems in sand dune crossings.

Thanks for the replies...

Note that if you have a vehicle that uses full time 4WD then an auto locker is not an option.

If you have a vehicle with selectable full time 4WD (say a Pajero or Pathfinder) then you lose the ability to use that full time 4WD.
