I am interested in buying a pair of IPF 900XS after good feedback from a current
forum question I asked. I was obvioulsy looking at one spot, one spread. The dealer though has suggested that I would be dissapointed in the spread and I should go for two spots. He said that
the spot is not as directional as other spots so I will still get my lateral coverage.
Going by the light pattern in the photo in the latest 4x4 monthly
the spot seems to be a good spot and the spread has a very good coverage. I tend to believe the picture more than a salesman!
What is an owners thoughts on this? 2 spots or 1 of each.
Thanks,
Gossy

One spot one spread!! for sure.
Two spots are good for fast hwy driving but no good on winding roads...
Spread only doesn't give you enough distance.
One spot, one spread is the best compromise.

I note your previous post was asking IPF users about IPF lights. What sort of response did you expect?? Like asking a Toyota owner about Toyotas, or an Engel user about Engels.
Suggest you look at a broader post- like 28629- for a more general consensus before you spend your hard earned.
Like a lot of information on this site- if you could take out the 'wanker brand name must have' component of a product life would be easier...
Just my threepence worth.

Why would you ask someone a question about a product who doesnt use it???
Makes sense to ask a user...
I am an Engel user and i would rather have a waeco because of a size issue..etc etc...

yep fair enough. It's annoying that IPF don't do a light/distance comparison with numbers like other brands like lightforce to compare (though the companies would probably just fudge the numbers anyway).
My only concern is the spread quality of the Lightforce 170's. I know they are a great light though as I have the 240 XGT's but as i mentioned in my previous
forum, they can't stay on all the time because of the size of them.

Not wanting to confuse the issue here but Nite Stalker lights are copy of the IPFs - and if price dictates quality the IPFs are dearer. Would they be worth considering?

The 900XS spotlight is awesome, super
bright and only a 65w globe and
water proof as
well - no point putting a spotlight on a 4x4 that drowns in the first
creek crossing.
The only light that will punch further is a 240 lightforce (only just) but the IPF is still much brighter and whiter light. Hard to explain until you have seen then side by side
I run two spots - if you need more light close up - upgrade the globe in your headlights.

I almost wish Gossy hadn't asked this...
Have ordered new ARB bar and 900XS IPF's for the Troopy..
Had convinced myself that one spot and one spread was the way to go..
Now??????????
Might just go 2 spots and a headlight upgrade.
How long have you had yours Michael and did you do a comparison with Lightforce yourself?

I have a mate who is a Roo shooter and mail contractor - he runs Rallye 4000's, Light Force 240's and the IPF 900XS spots on different utes - he says that the IPF 900XS kill the rallye 4000s put out a better light than the 240 but the 240 punch slightly further - he will be running the IPF's on any new vehicles.

Tks Michael,
I guess each to his/her own but for me, 2 IPF 900xs spots plus upgrade headlights it is (was gonna do headlights anyway) and don't think I can go fast enough to do justice to Lightforce..LOL

For a comparison we have two work utes plus my personal Rodeo. One work ute has Lightforce 240 Blitz and the other has IPF 800 (rectangular) all spots no spreads while my Rodeo has Nitestalker 175 (???) one spot one spread.
Both work utes have upgraded headlights, bulbs and looms.
As far as light quality goes the Lightforce win hands down and I will be buying a pair for my next vehicle. They were also the most expensive and they are the biggest. As for the IPF and Nitestalker I really can't tell the difference. Other than a small difference as my ute has one spread and the work ute doesn't. However I removed my Nitestalkers from my ute after 4 1/2 years and the bolts were rusty and the bolt spun in its captive bit which means they were a PITA to remove. Whereas I realigned the IPFs the other day and after about 2 years their bolts were as new. The IPFs were $300ish and the Nitestalkers were $160. Big price difference for no difference in light output.
I have heard before that the Nitestalkers are IPF copies. They even told me that when I bought the Nitestalkers from Opposite Lock but of course ARB denied it when we bought the IPFs from them.

The IPF 800 Series is a
well built and reliable light but the 900XS series have twice the light output! I think it is something like 280,000 candle power compared to 520,000 candle power for half the power draw.

Gossy,
The consensus by reputable resellers is that one spot and one spread is best.
The spread is fitted to the left side of vehicle to better light up the left side of the road and
the spot is fitted to the right side of vehicle which basically points directly down the centre of the road.
I don't have IPF 900XS so I can't comment on their effectiveness.
I chose the IPF 800 because they were the only ones that I found that came in a rectangular version and they fitted my bullbar better.
They are certainly
bright enough for my needs at the posed speed limit.
The fact they had a metal housing as apposed to the lighter plastic housing of the Lightforce was also a factor I took into consideration, but have not noticed any problems from corrugated tracks, etc.
So, for my mind, one of each.
"Brighter" is not necessarily "better".

thanks everyone for your feedback. I have checked with Opposite Lock in
Adelaide. The Night Stalkers are made on the same production line but not exactly the same light.
He had not heard of the 900 XS which surprised me but he talked about the 170 being an excellent light (as we all know they are). Trying to find the candle power of the IPF as I will leave this as my final decision because they both seem very good. The lightforce 170 is 350,000 candle power. I cannot find any info on the IPF for candlepower on the web though.
This is all part of a mini project I am doing on the patrol. I have removed the Cibie's and put a "uni bar" on the front of our Telstar for these. The new lights (what ever they may be from these answers) will replace the cibies and be on all the time. The Lightforce 240's will go on just for extended trips away.
if it doesn't make sense then go to www.gossadventures.com for pictures of how the car was. The Simpson link will show the more recent pictures as there are some pictures where the car is "nude" before I put anything on it.
thanks,

As a
point of interest, IPF also make the 900 HID
Possibly not available off-the-shelf in Aust though - and at $1,600 may not sell too many.

thanks Michael B for the numbers. The HID are way too expensive. Already spent enough on the vehicle!
At this stage I think I will go 1 spot and 1 spread. Won't always be on open straight roads so the spread would be better for tracks etc.
Thanks,

I have used rally 4000's for a few years now and have no complaint. They light up to about 800meters (2 spot lights) down the road and they were great on a recent trip from
Halls Creek to Alice being lit all night a 12 hour drive. And i here people saying dont get them wet. We forded a creek in the Northern Territory, water just lapping over the bonnet(jim Jim ck on the way to
Twin Falls) No dramas at all. They lit up the way
home back to
Darwin that night.

well I finally did it and went out and bought the 900XS. Put them on and tested last night. Quite impressed with them. Big improvement of the Cibies.
I went for one spot and one spread.
For their size and wattage I was very impressed. When I turned on the Lightforce 240 XGT's you can still see that these are brighter and more effective but you would expect that due to the sheer size of them.
These will do a very good job being the permanent lights on the car.
Thanks everyone for your help and advice.
