undecided pls help

thanks for all the advise but i am still undecided between the hilux 3L diesel or the rodeo turbo diesel i have a camper trailer and will be doing the gibb river road and quiet a bit of serious off road with the trailer attached so any comments will be very gratefully appreciated

Hi Luke,

Check out the 4X4 Australia mag this month - they have a review of the Hilux vs the Courier ute, but mention is made of the Rodeo.

Basically the Hilux is the business, but at a price.

As always, you get what you pay for.

this may help, visit your local dealers and try to cost the servicing and cost of parts.
compare the costs of servicing between holden and toyota over 12 months.

Luke,
I,ve had a 95 Rodeo diesel dualcab for 5 years, 160000 km. Its had a camper trailer attached for
28000 km, (Oodnadatta Track, Dalhousie Springs, Old Ghan to Alice, Darwin, Kakadu, Litchfield,
Fraser Island, Flinders Ranges), all up weight in camping mode of 3.25 tonne, the trailer weighing in around the
tonne fully loaded with fuel & water. Fuel consumption, with trailer attached, at 110 kmh is between
21-23 mpg, if speed kept around 100kmh, 23-25 mpg.
Recent excursions to Alice Springs & Darwin, which included some driving without the trailer, (10%)
have averaged 25 mpg.
The only major item I,ve replaced is an alternator.

Accessories fitted,
ARB high roof canopy, Finer Filter heavy duty air filter, Electric trailer brakes, GME UHF,
Dual battery system (2nd battery in marine battery box in tray), Big Red compressor under bonnet,
GD Gitsham aluminium bull bar, Kingsley side steps, Lightforce spotlights, Hall 1800 kg towbar.
Apart from replacing worn shock absorbers, suspension is standard.

Greg, with the Gitsham Bull Bar you have on your Rodeo, did you get the Mega-Bar or standard Bull Bar. The two types of Bull Bars have different mounting brackets, and the Mega-Bar does not allow the fitting of the standard Rodeo fron Recovery Hook. If you have the Mega-Bar, you really need to consider 'snatching' from the eyes in the Mega-Bar mounting bracket. Apparently the rear recovery hook from the current model Jackaroo's are straight, and can be fitted in lieu of the angled Rodeo Hook. Cheers, Dion.

Luke, I have a 2000 Turbo Diesel Rodeo sigle cab. I have since had the engine fitted with an intercooler, and costantly return around the 30 - 31 mpg when not towing. I have a Gitsham Bar, GME UHF and 27 MHz wireless', 4WD Systems 125l replacement tank, Tuff Lids tonneu cover, a Safari Snorkel. Items still on the wish list is a dual battery system, (shortlist of one, Pirahna 150S), and an overhead console to mount the two wireless'. The only CAUTION I have is a situation caused by myself because of my choice of accessories, the Gitsham 'Mega-Bar' does not allow the use of the standard Rodeo front Recover Hook, although I am very soon going to rectify this. I love my Rodeo. Cheers, Dion.

Luke, the Safari Snorkel I do not find noisy, and fuel consumption difference is neglible. The big plus with the snorkel is how clean the air cleaner element stays. Ground clearance - I haven't really tackled any rocky trails in it, but do concede that is where the Hilux may have it over the Rodeo, with ground clearence, but I still prefer my Rodeo over dad's Hilux.
