Garmin etrex legend

I bought a etrex Legend today without cables or manuals but downloaded a manual from the Garmin webpage. The standard map on the etrex is pretty sad and i wonder if I can install better software/ maps to the Legend or is that it what I got?
It has 8MB spare room so I asume there must be a way and I hope I don't have to spend a fortune for a good map.
I can buy power and data cables on e-bay at a reasonable price .

cheers

Reiner,

Yes on the legend you can. My son has it and he has installed the Australian Metroguide software and it provides much more substantial mapping. I think he purchased his software from Johnny Appleseed. IF you do a google or similar search for them you will track them down.

Thanks Brian, I found the shop in Annerly on Ipswich Road. I had a look at the Johnny Appleseed webpage too..... looks like another shop where I can't go un-supervised :-)

Reiner G,

If you have or can get the Map Source (which is a Garmin software to upload the map on GPS) there are very good free maps Tracks4Australia. If not go for Metroguide Australia (no auto routing but cheaper), and then you can install free maps.

The maps that are available from Garmin and tracks4australia are much smaller in size then from/for other brands. 8MB should be sufficient for around 400-500km of maps depending on level of details.

Lukasz

Thanks Lukasz, downloaded the software and play with it later. 400-500km mapsize would be plenty to learn about gps.
I think down the track a unit with memory cards would be smart or I might ad a PDA to it. Lots to learn by the looks of things.
