If you have or can get the Map Source (which is a Garmin software to upload the map on
GPS) there are very good free maps Tracks4Australia. If not go for Metroguide
Australia (no auto routing but cheaper), and then you can install free maps.
The maps that are available from Garmin and tracks4australia are much smaller in size then from/for other brands. 8MB should be sufficient for around 400-500km of maps depending on level of details.

I think down the track a unit with memory cards would be smart or I might ad a PDA to it. Lots to learn by the looks of things.
