What to do with a busted compressor.

Submitted: Saturday, Jan 14, 2006 at 06:30

I have (had) a HD generic Supercheap brand compressor that was given to me by a well meaning younger brother a few years ago and has served adequately untill the new years just gone when the compressor big-end and bearing disintegrated pumping up an air mattress. Thankfully it was my air bed and the mother-in-law had to use the handpump.

The question now begs, I now have a fairly powerfull 12volt motor that is otherwise in good condition. Has anyone got any suggestions for what it could be used for?

Gear it down to run a spit?

Other than that, no idea. Stick it in a box under the work bench, it may come in handy one day

We should all post the contents of our "it'll come in handy one day" boxes. I'm sure some of the stuff I have had sitting in mine for the last 10 years would have been useful to someone ...

Cheers

A couple of suggestions

Gear it down to run a jockey wheel on the trailer. Beats the s*** out of pushing your trailer, or holing you bumper everytime you hitch up a trailer.

Buy one of those cheap "monkey bikes" and power it up a bit. (~400w vs 200w) hehehehehehe

Might not be too hard to fix.

Glenn,
I think he's already consigned the actual "compressor" part to the junk pile, but what he after is suggestions as to what the leccy motor might be good for as it is still functioning okay.

The fan motor died on a very old car fridge [Sheen] and I used the motor out of one of those cheap plastic box type compressors to replace it, I tell you what all it needed was a pair of wings and it would have flown! Finnished up buying a computer fan from Dick Smith.

Thanks for the ideas, some are definite possibilities.

also thought I might be able to rig up an electric trolling motor for a canoe, the options seem to be vast.

Be assured that now the free compressor is gone I will now be looking at a more robust solution, blue-tounge, big red, et. al. Ideally an engine driven and tank setup would be nice but there is SFA space in the enginebay around the belt in a 3.0L nissan, (mind when the 3.0L gives upi the ghost and the 4.2 or 6.5L comes into play the options are staggering)

Also thought that a whipper snipper motor could be modified to run as a compressor and use the motor to drive it, or if anyone has an old compressor with a burnt out motor perhaps we could try and do some collective recycling?
