Help Needed Choosing a new old Truck...

Submitted: Sunday, Jan 15, 2006 at 10:09

WheelTravel

Hi all... Well the authorities have been convinced that we need a 4wd. after the Troopy goes...( I'm still working on the twin lockers, muddies, and lift though!)

I am after a short wheel base Toyota... no offence Nissan people, but i wouldn't wanna embarrass myself ;)

At first glance, a SWB 75 series looks the goods as I can transfer heaps of the gear over from the troopy. Though I have always tought an FJ 40 would be nice.

Also the Bundera is meant to be pretty good and there is a MID wheel base model? Is it a 73 series?

I would love a soft top... but they have their cons too... like rain/security etc.

Any opinions, and inherent problems/experience with these vehicles or similar would be muchly appreciated.

Cheers

Wheely

I had a Bundera a while back

It was probably built on a Friday afternoon late..............It was a lemon!

If you want a shorty buy a Tojo BJ42 and trick it up. You can even remove the canopy if you wish. It is a go anywhere machine. Strong as an ox.

Wheeltravel,

Yeah its the 73 and 74 series you're after. - BJ73 for the diesel; FJ73 for the petrol and BJ74 for the turbodiesel. And they came with a FRP top.

Came with the 3F 6 cyl petrol motor and the diesels were 3.4 litres.
I also recollect that there were a handful with the pz series turbo diesel, which I thought were 5 cylinders, but I'm a bit hazy on them.

All were leaf spring all round.

The Bunderas (70 series) were a smaller vehicle with coil springs and the petrol motor was the 4 cylinder 22R motor.

Look up REdbook and check out the specs on the ones you're interested. Look at 1985 to 1990.

Cheers

Hi Phil,

Just wondering if you know what the official name for the SWB 75 series is? Or did I just say it? As far as I can tell, seat, bullbar, and various other mounting brackets for the 73/74 and Bundera are not in the same spec as the troopy.

So the SWB 75 is the only go by the looks,

Or is the 73/74 the SWB 75?

If so... are the mounting pts the same?

I.E Bullbar/OverHead and Middle Storage consoles, Seat mount points etc etc.

If... 73/74 = SWB 75 & Mounting Points are Different then I'm back to the drawing board!

Wheely,

The 73/74 series was usually known as a "Mid wheelbase" LandCruiser, and was the popular one that came with the FRP top.

The 70series (Bundera) as mentioned above was the "Short wheelbase" and was a hardtop - a bit small for many.

The 75 series was always the long wheelbase - either troopie or cabchassis from 1985 to 1999.

Then in 1999, Toyota replaced the 75series with the 78 and 79series. I guess the chose different numbers because the Traytop now has a longer wheelbase than the troopie.

The petrol 73/74 series were petrol guzzlers (like most 3F motored LandCruisers) but it was a pretty reliable motor and is easy and cheap to fix. The diesel 3.4 litre 3B motor was as relaible as they get, but was naturally pretty gutless by today's standards. But they are good vehicles, with the heavy duty running gear - same as was on the 60series at the time.

Cheers

Hi Weely, I had a FJ73 great truck it had the 3F petrol motor in it. That motor came out and a 1HZ Diesel went in. Every thing from the front seats forward is the same as 75series. The front and rear diffs are the same. Gearbox is the same. The ride is verry harsh, i had about 3in lift and 285/75/16 on it. The FRP top is not very strong for mounting roofracks. Also they only come with open center rear diff(no LSD) I fitted a HZJ 75 LSD, But first I striped it sandblasted the clutchplates replaced the bearings. It ended up as good as a patrol LSD. They stoped making this model in 1989 . I heard that the Darwin army or navy imported a few of these and they were standed with 1HZ motor.

Weely, the top was a bit of a pain to get off. Bolts across top of windscreen, 3 in roll bar above your head, and remove rear side panels and remove row of bolts up in the inner guard. It lookes a bit silley because the back and front doors are still at full height.

K's are lower than I thought, in fact amazing low for an 86... although coming from Japan , I guess they don't have to drive far... which I guess could well mean that many of the k's are short distance ones???

Also being an Import... will my Troopy stuff still transfer to it?

Price is still high... what is your learned opinion?

Cheers Mate...

Me again, as long as the body shape is the same as the OZ shape your troopy parts will fit but your bullbar will need modifing for the PTO winch. As far as i can rember 13B motor came out in the coaster bus and dyna truck without the turbo. I dont know how much fuel they use my 4.2 got 10L/100k. Price, I got $10,000 for mine 4 years ago(you have got me wishing I never sold mine, but 2 doors and a baby dont mix). Try getting a mag called just 4X4 it is a auto trader mag just on 4X4 most news agents have them, might give you a better idea on price. The motor as far as I know is as strong as an ox, the auto I dont know anything about them.
