2001 GU Patrol Front Auto Hub problem

Travelling home the other day doing about 100kph on the Hume a loud rattling noise started coming from the drivers side front wheel hub. I stopped and had a look but couldn't see anything obvious. Continued on the noise was gone, about 3 or 4 kilometres later it did it again, I pulled over to the side of the road and as I came to a stop there was a very slight clunk in the front end. I reversed to see if the front hub may have been still engaged as I had used 4wd earlier that day. Travelled the rest of the way home about 100 kilometres with no problem. Any ideas.

Mate had the same issue coming back from a trip recently. Not sure what caused it but maybe the hub wasn't completely unlocked then along the way the autohub started to engage hence making the noise. Just reversed and appeared to be ok but did it again a few kay's later. It stopped after rersing again and hasn't come back.

I had the same prob and it was the spring in the hub and still is. Solution = As the replacement part was very exy went and installed manual hubs now never happens. And yes I do have a lockrite in the front. Now soon as I think I may need 4wd lock the hubs and engage high range whenever it is warranted , back on black top unlock while pumping tyres and checking same.

Had the same happen. Was the spring in the auto hubs.Choice was either replace the auto hubs - expensive. Went back to the ancient method - manual hubs. Did pick up some second hand auto hubs - one of these days I'll swap them back.

I had a similar problem with an old 92 patrol, and it was the pin that engages the four wheel drive in the gerabox(differential) its a spring with a pin it gets stuck sometimes and engages the fourwheel drive on

Above advice sounds right to me.
I infinitely prefer manual hubs anyway.... I have removed auto ones off my mates 4WD and he's much happier now than he was with the auto ones.

I have had the same thing happen. Now when I have been in 4WD, after dissengaging 4WD and taking the hubs back to auto, I just reverse a few feet before taking off. It hasn't happened since I started doing this.
