Any Suggested Routes - Wollongong - Uluru - Wollongong

Submitted: Sunday, Jan 15, 2006 at 13:33

Andy Yule

Hi, We are in the early stages of planning 4WD camping trip to Uluru - with the journey being part of the adventure. We want to avoid the bitumen, but don't want to be too remote ( we have 2 children aged 8 and 11).

Can any one suggest a suitable route, taking into account sites of interest. We are looking to allow 18 days for the trip and expect to travel in June/July.

Thanks!

Hi Thanks for the route info! Can I ask a couple of questions?
1. When did you travel
2. How long did it take
3. Can you suggest any suitable maps

Thanks again!

We left 17 Sept and returned 15 Oct
The desert parks pass has all the maps you need.
I also bought a Flinders Ranges Hema map as well.
I used, or my kids used a Hema road atlas for the majority of the trip.
Sept was pretty hot. Nearly every day around 42 degrees but still a great trip.
We did it slowly and had very few over night stops. Most were 2 and in the Flinders was 4.

Dear Andy,
See Kerrie's post on 14/1 Post no: 29692
Her trip sounds great.
The journey across the Simpson to Birdsville is a wonderul experience - best going from west to east because dunes are often easier and not travelling into afternoon sun.
Have fun,
Marilyn

we are planning same sort of trip with our 3 and 1 yr old for end of Aug...from nowra, going via Broken Hill and then into SA,Wilpena Pound, Oodandatta track up through Finke,Chambers Piller,Alice,Mereenie loop on to Uluru/Ayers Rock...we are going north then ....there are heaps of ways to go....
We are the same - wanting the adventure without being too remote...Ood -Alice looks really good and its not tar!!! From nsw you could head to Wagga and then across Hay Plain into SA - a little bit lower than entrance from Broken Hill....Hay plain ok - done it once- thats good enough for me!!
Good Luck!! laura
