Boat rack for Prado 120

Looking for advice on type of rack i should be getting for my Prado. I can carry a 12 ft tinnie comfortably on the camper but I'm not keen on a folding trailer for the odd time I can't camp near the water. They take up a lot of space!

Was thinking about a set of Rhino racks or equivalent?

Anyone else been through this and got some suggestions? A search of the web comes up with many different brands and options.

I am thinking that an ARB/TJM full rack is a pain to put on and off and store. We only trip with the boat 4 times a year so the rack would be removed.

Anyway your thoughts on all this is appreciated.

I have had an ECB rack fitted but I am not happy with it due to the way it tapers.
Unfortunately the 120 series roof mounts determine where it is mounted.
The ECB rack is well built and I am happy with the performance, just not happy with the shape.
The ARB rack will be better but I don't think it will be wide enough for a boat so I think you will be stuck with the Rhino. The price is about the same as the others.

Thanks for the reply. Rhino rack seems the best option from the searching I have done. I had some on a work vehicle and the wind noise was terrible. i see they have a newer improved design now though.

we have a 90 series Prado and when looking at racks came across the MAX roof weight recommended by Toyota. For the 90 series it is 75Kg. We purchased an alloy rack so we could lift it on and off (height challenged in garage) and missus and I can just manage it together. it weighs 33Kg. the steel racks of ARB etc are much more.

Point is you might want to look at MAX weight of the 120 roof - if you put a rack and a tinnie on top will you exceed it and will that cause a problem with insurance if ever involved in an accident.

I know our roof will take more than 75Kg with ease but they put a MAX on it for stability rather than carrying capacity.

Thanks for the heads up. I hadn't thought of the Max weight issue. My manual says do not exceed 80kg on the roof bars. I think it means the factory bars if they are fitted.

We have recently bought a 2002 Prado (before the shape changed in that year) and have just put a roof rack with bars added to enable us to carry a 12 ft tinny on the roof. I do not know about 90 series, 120 series Prados etc, but our handbook shows that we can put up to 100 kg on the roof of the Prado. We dealt with our local ARB store (Adventure 4WD in Mandurah, W.A. - phone (08)9583.3200). They fitted a Tracklander Roof Rack and bars to our vehicle. The Tracklander, made from tough but lightweight alloy tubing and reinforced at the points of most stress, is made by Jaram Roof Rack Systems, 12 Railway Parade, Welshpool, W.A. 6106 - phone (08)9451.0700 or freecall 1800.998.269. Because of the width of the Prado's roof the bars for the boat extend beyond the roof rack to take the width of the tinny. The bars are easy to remove if needed (like to fit the vehicle into the garage!!). Hope this is helpful to you.
