Who reads past the first page of posts?

Gday,

Just curious...who here reads past the first page on the forum?

If ive been away and havent viewed for a while...i never read past the first page.
Alternatively...once a topic goes off the first page i stop posting on it.

Am I just lazy...or do others do the same?

Cheers
Rev

Rev,
I have the page set to view as Response Time Order.
That way when someone replies to a post regardless of how old it will come to the top of the page.
A popular post that has a lot of responses will be on the first page if not at the top.

At the top of the page a blue box with Forum Search Options. on the bottom of the box there is Sort Options. In red it will have " All Active Treads Sorted by Post ID", in blue it will have" Switch to Response Time Order". If you click on the latter it will change to the order that a response or thread was last posted.

I'm another one that uses the Response Time Order.

But why is the default font size for the forum so HUGE?

All the text down the left column and in the tabs on top is much smaller.

Perhaps the average reading age of the folks on here is higher than I thought or is largely made up of folks who did naughty things when they were kids that made them go blind?

Ciao for now
Andrew.

Sounds like you have your browser font select set to something other than normal. If Internet Explorer go View - Font Size and make sure it is set to Normal.

Well I prefer to use Opera, but be that as it may, even in IE6, the only text changed by the View-Text Size change is in the buttons and headings, not the text of the posts.

Seems you have it fixed ...

OK, but then using the same logic you would not open up 5-10 categories to read the first page of results in each category either I guess?

There is no easy answer when this forum receives around 50 new threads and around 500-1000 answers and followups per day. How do you keep up to speed, some will and some won't. I do not think the format has much to do with it.

There has been some feedback about adding an additional category to threads that would allow you to open the site in an optional category mode however I have not looked into this as I think I can acheive the same result with search. In any case if you do not read past the first page then categories may not help as you would have to open up to 10 pages looking at between 20-80% of each page anyway.

The answers are never easy.

I'm a frequent user of www.dpreview.com's forums (many more forum features like viewing your own threads, viewing others posts etc.).

The categories work, because it tells you how many new posts there are, who is the most recent poster, etc. I have an interest in quite a number of the categories and I can see them at one view.

It is a much more rapidly moving site than this, and it works well.

I recommend you take a look - as much as I appreciate all your hard work programming this site, I can't help thinking that if the same energy were layered on top of a configurable package that you'd have an even better site!

Ciao for now

This subject seems to generate a lot of, shall we say, firm opinions.

But if you don't know what you're missing ...

you don't know what you're missing.

If you've used the features of some of the more functional forums around you'll know that most of the things people perceive that they lose going to categories, can be got back quickly and easily with high functionality forums.

The FAQ could be more readily accessed by newbies without annoying the natives, questions more than 1 day old answered for people who needed those answers from folks who didn't see them on that day, subjects of no interest to users would not get in the way of their access to information and their contribution to the forum.

I must be an ExplorOz junkie.

If I have been away a few days I enter the date in the search field that I want to begin from, then start at the bottom (last page) and work forwards.

I don't necessarily open and read every Post, only the ones whose heading attracts my interest.

I guess we all have different ways of doing things.

Now, for the "sales pitch".

Im hankering for one of those wheel covers too.

Im frequent other forums (perth4x4.net, patrol4x4.com, 4wdmonthly.com) and they all have categorised areas. are all interesting for a short time.

However I like exploroz format as you get a broad variation of post topics that you may not usually find in a category you dont bother looking under.

I did like finding out about the time response however. I dont usually post unless i have something to say...but i read the forum daily.

Again David keep up the good work.
