Petrol Hilux Tyres

Does anyone have a Petrol Hilux 2003 2.7. Mine doesnt seem to have a tyre plaquard - Im curious what is legal for it. I currently have 31 * 10.5 R15 tyres on it - yes I know this isnt strictly legal. It seems to have a hard time pushing them on Sand (eg stockton) - what do other people run on there hilux and how does it perform?

I ran the same size as you on Stokton, at around 12psi, no problem at all, diesel as well.

I was running 15, maybe I should go a bit lower - It was at the south end (lavis lane) a couple of weeks ago, I really had to flog it to get it over the dunes, kept feeling like it was going to stall. Some times I thought it would bog and had to reverse up and get a faster run up. Car is fine on road, no lack of power.

I have a 2002 3.4 V6 Hilux.

I run the 31x10.5x15 tyres too. It does sap the power a bit. Mine is an SR5, so it can standard with 255/70R15 tyres. The equlivent size is basically a 30x9.5x15. This will give you a slightly wider tyre than the standard cheese cutters, but the diameter is the same. Being smaller than the 31" tyre, will give you some more power, but be about 4-5km slower on the highway when the speedo is reading 100kmh.

Also, pressures are important for sand. I ran 20psi on Fraser, and that was fine, and about the same across the Simpson. In both cases, the sand was very firm, as it had been raining recently. I actually went down to 12psi on Big Red, to get over the hard track.

Thanks for that,

mine is a standard dual cab.

FYI - I checked the speed on mine with a GPS and with the 31 tyres the speedo is bang on - ie 100Km = 100km. Im thinking I might try 30 * 9.5 next to lower the gearing a bit,

The 31s dont scrub but when I turn tight there is some clunking in the front end - Ive had a mechanic look at it all and Ive checked it out myself cant work out what it is - hoping smaller tyres might sort it out too.

Cheers,

B

I think you'll find that the 205R16 on split rims were standard.

I was lead to believe that the 30x9.5x15 was a very similar diameter to both of these tyres. My experience is with the 255/70R16 tyres, and the 30" tyre falls within the 15mm oversize regulation of this tyre.

g'day digger,

my 2003 hilux v6 has a 2" or so lift and I run 265/65x16 BFG A/Ts. That's the equivalent of 32.4x11.1x16 remembering from the top of my head. That put me speedo out by 9% so when my speedo showed 100kph I was actually going 109kph. I fixed this buy purchasing and fitting a programmable speedo ratio box from Marks Adaptors. Was about 160 bux and it's money well spent coz you got 2 different setting which you can set 1 up for your smaller road tyres and then flick the switch and have a setting for larger mud-terrains, and the speedo will still be fine.

When this set of tyres wears out will look into a 2" body lift and a set of 285/75x16 which is 33.4x12.3x16. Should look tuff.
