Speed limits & signage in NSW.

Axle

Hi all.
Travelling around the central coast here in NSW is getting very frustrating, with all the variations in speed limits over very short distances.40 ks school zone, 50ks , 60ks, 70ks 80 ks , 90ks all in a distance of 20 bloody kms?.

Also came back from bathurst to windsor over the bells line of road through the blue mountains last week, same thing variation in speed limits very frustrating.

Must be getting old ? Whinge for the week

Cheers Axle

Yeah, well I reckon speed limits are a road hazard anyhow.

We should all drive to the conditions and if we don't then the Police should charge us with an offence like Neg Drive or similar. None of this set speed limits etc. Just think about it. If the speed limit says 110 then any old heap of @#$% can be driven at that speed. The poor beggar with the brand new car with all it's handling aids and safety features will get booked if he or she exceeds the limit because it is "Unsafe" , yet the fool in his 1962 Kombi van can do 110 and still be "Safe"

No logic I reckon!

Well the comment above was for NSW, it is even worse in the Nanny State with Nanny Bracks. I agree with the sentiments you express so far. There are good reason to set reasonable limits for reasonable roads. The thing is I am half expecting a revolution when Bracksie sets the standards for country roads on the Geelong Road. A 130 kph capable road limited to 100 so a 100 kph road limited to 70kph or even 80kph? Bring it on.

The spin for enforcing camera on the safest road in the state. "Twenty deaths in the last ten years" Only one on the 100kph section since the road was upgraded and opened on November 2002 - one in four years and it was a drug crazed driver pushed a fellow into the roadside hardware. A bit diffeerent to the two a year the minister paints and the police deputy commissioner too. The revenue raiser cameras don't pick up the drug affected yet I think. I look forward to that sight.

Of course the other thing is that there are no bad roads in Aus. It doesn't matter how good they make our roads we will always have some people who will drive inappropriately on a road no matter how good or bad it is.

The other thing is the technological improvements in our vehicles. This says to some people "it is OK to drive faster, take corners quicker and drive closer to the person in front because I have ABS, Stability Control, Drive assist or whatever" So they will and still cause accidents.

Nice idea notso, but how do police that.
" I know I was travelling fast officer but my car is good" and slip them $100.

Or you could have signs that say

"Speed limit 200
take off 5km/h for every year of the age of you car
also take off a further 10 km/h if it's raining
take off a further 10 km/h if your car has a high centre of gravity.
a further 5km/h if kids are with you
20% less if you're towing
40% less around corners
20% more if driving a luxury car"

That'll should make it clear and logical

Yes thats exactly what I reckon. Make them prove that what you were doing was unsafe. Se at the moment speeding is an absolute offence, in other words you are deemed to be guilty as soon as you exceed the speed limit.

Why do we have speed limits? To make the roads safe? Well if that's the case then we need to decide what is safe and what isn't. There is no court in the land that would say it is safe to belt along a winding country road at 110 kph in a 1962 VW Kombi. But they do say it is unsafe to drive your BMW, Jag, Ford or Holden with all the handling gear etc at that speed. Now it is not logical.

I say put it back on the police to prove it was unsafe or the driver to prove it was safe. That might have two effects, give or police a bit more overtime and make drivers think a bit more about their driving habits

Axle,

You took the best route, Bells Line of Road. There are far more on the Gt Western Hwy through all those hamlets in the mountains.

Agree there Gramps, Great western hwy is a shocker, especially while all the road works is going on. might be allright when its all finished, need a decent hwy through the mountains to help open up the central west, theres a lot land out there that could be sensibly developed.

Or, and this happened to me last week, you get locked in by a guy in front doing 60 on a 100 k stretch. Even better though, the slow guy in front had a cop sitting right behind him, then me then a stack of others. This guy sat on 60 for at least 15 minutes in the end the cops overtook him on double lines and let us have to sit behind until we had a chance to pass. But every k over is a killer, what a croc.
