There are good reason to set reasonable limits for reasonable roads. The thing is I am half expecting a revolution when Bracksie sets the standards for country roads on the Geelong Road. A 130 kph capable road limited to 100 so a 100 kph road limited to 70kph or even 80kph? Bring it on.

The spin for enforcing camera on the safest road in the state. "Twenty deaths in the last ten years" Only one on the 100kph section since the road was upgraded and opened on November 2002 - one in four years and it was a drug crazed driver pushed a fellow into the roadside hardware. A bit diffeerent to the two a year the minister paints and the police deputy commissioner too. The revenue raiser cameras don't pick up the drug affected yet I think. I look forward to that sight.

Of course the other thing is that there are no bad roads in Aus. It doesn't matter how good they make our roads we will always have some people who will drive inappropriately on a road no matter how good or bad it is.

The other thing is the technological improvements in our vehicles. This says to some people "it is OK to drive faster, take corners quicker and drive closer to the person in front because I have ABS, Stability Control, Drive assist or whatever" So they will and still cause accidents.

Or you could have signs that say

"Speed limit 200
take off 5km/h for every year of the age of you car
also take off a further 10 km/h if it's raining
take off a further 10 km/h if your car has a high centre of gravity.
a further 5km/h if kids are with you
20% less if you're towing
40% less around corners
20% more if driving a luxury car"

That'll should make it clear and logical

Yes thats exactly what I reckon. Make them prove that what you were doing was unsafe. Se at the moment speeding is an absolute offence, in other words you are deemed to be guilty as soon as you exceed the speed limit.

Why do we have speed limits? To make the roads safe? Well if that's the case then we need to decide what is safe and what isn't. There is no court in the land that would say it is safe to belt along a winding country road at 110 kph in a 1962 VW Kombi. But they do say it is unsafe to drive your BMW, Jag, Ford or Holden with all the handling gear etc at that speed. Now it is not logical.

I say put it back on the police to prove it was unsafe or the driver to prove it was safe. That might have two effects, give or police a bit more overtime and make drivers think a bit more about their driving habits

Agree there Gramps, Great western hwy is a shocker, especially while all the road works is going on. might be allright when its all finished, need a decent hwy through the mountains to help open up the central west, theres a lot land out there that could be sensibly developed.
