SA/Vic Border Track

Is there anyone here that has done that Border track from Near Pinnaroo to the Sturt Hwy. I have been across the Murray Sunset Park and passed Rocket Lake on one trip in there and about 18 months later decided to try the Border South to North , Well i just wasn't prepared for the huge dune i came across, I knew there are dunes in there but hell this thing was steeper than Big Red so because i was alone and it was near summeri just back trackrd and went another route

You wont have any trouble from Pinnaroo heading north, just routine stuff.
There are a couple of big dunes along the Border Track to the south but they are usually tackled north/south because of the one way section.

Easy Doug, just put your pics in the members pictures and then make sure you have a signature - just the words that trigger the picture to load. Something like Ray has Ray, Hilux by Toy..... I can't say it... LOL

Doug, At the top left click on "my home" and then "My Rig" Load the first pic and this will be the pic that appears bottom left in your posts.

To activate this pic so i it appears in your posts go into "My Profile" and add some text to the signature box.

Hi there Doug,

As others have said, the Border Track section through Ngarkat Conservation park is closed due to bushfire risk at present until the start of April (I think) and has to be done North South anyways.

It is also being upgraded in conjunction with 4WD clubs (not sure which) to remove the large number of alternative tracks through the dunes (they have apparently left one such alternate route), and to fill the cruiser-sized bog holes which were viewed as a safety issue - some Sahara driver took his pride and joy in there with water up to the roof and had to break out his sunroof to get out! National Parks thought that this was a pretty dumb idea.

Also some of the other tracks on the Western side of the park have been closed due to the recent fires there.

Yeh it's amazing where ppl will try to take a [submarine ] 4x4, 500mm of still or slow flowing is all i will tackle simply because i do not want water inside the car,2nd it could get into diffs and gearbox if they are hot , best to park up for a few hrs and have a coffee , There was a drama just recently on the Gunpowder mine road where a Semi was washed of a causeway , unfortunatly the driver paid the utimate price and his passenger was saved, i mean this truck was 50 meters from the road and the Cab and trailer were on its side, now i'm sure there would be fools out there that would try same in a 4x4.

I saw a Hiace campervan (rental) washed off a causeway on the road out of Litchfield in January - was only 400mm of water but it was moving real fast and a Hiace presents a very wide flat profile I guess!

Done it 2 years ago with CT. No problems at all. From Pinnaroo cross over the railway line on S bend at SA/VIC border then 100meters turn left on to Border Road (Track). This is the most Western raod NOT Panitya North Road which parallels it. At/near Boltons Soak look for sign on right saying Old Ecu (worth a shot diversion & then back to N/S track at Boltons. You have to divert East to Peebinga further up then back West to Border Track. In Sunset NP divert E the N to Rockholes & native apricot trees. Head up Millewa South Bore Track & can camp at Shearers quarters (I believe the actual building is now closed but nice campsite nearby) Keep headin N to old outstation of Neds Corner (ruins) & uo to Sturt Hwy. Reccomend VERY strongly Book called Mallee Tracks (gives details of about 20 4WD trips in the area). Authors Jill Nickolls & Ann Angel. Book has history of area flora fauna etc. about $35 I think (ISBN 0 646 42023 2). Ngarkat all burnt out NBG at present. Enjoy!
