Departure only, otherwise motorbikes would only get booked on departure and never on approach, as they don't have a front number plate.

If its departure only what happens with a van etc on the back...We have a policeman that sets up a mobile camara up outside our office he claims his camera picks up both approach and departure...havent been game to put it to the test......

Don't know if it is true or not but I have heard of a guy submitting his GPS Track Log as defence in a case like this and getting off.

Could well be worth a try. Does the GPS log show him as speeding at the point where the camera is cause that is the other consideration.

Under those circumstances I reckon I would pay for the pic and, if there is any doubt as to validity I would appeal.

One of the reasons for taking the back of the vehicle and also for not sending the photo was that the expense of the fine was nothing compared to the divorce settlement when the wife opened the letter and saw hubby with the mistress

In QLD they photograph the front only. Big stink a while back about bikies hooning in front of cameras, knowing they can't get caught......

I could be wrong but I did read once that in NSW they only photograph from the rear because it is an invasion of privacy for them to photograph from the front as they may get the face of passenger and driver which may lead, sometimes to situations as mentioned above.
Some one must know for sure or have enough points to try it out.

Hi All,

I would suggest suggest at least making a phone call to the office and asking a few questions about the picture before going to the expense of paying for it, we received a fine in the mail for a speeding infringement from a camera located on the opposite side of Canberra to where we live. Because we hadn't been over that side of Canberra much in recent times we called them up to obtain a copy of the photo, however after speaking with the lady about the photo she couldn't make out the license number from the photo. Apparently because it was a dark coloured falcon sedan and the first three letters were visible they did a computer search and ours was the first registered car that came up so they sent the fine to us. As it happened the photo was taken at something like 2am on a week night, which meant it definately wasn't us and as soon as we said they had made a mistake the lady said not to worry about it she would cancel the fine and we would receive confirmation in the mail shortly, which we did.

When we questioned her about it further, she informed us that they would just do another search and send it to the next on the list, I assume this would continue until such time as someone just paid it without question.

If it had been a camera on our side of Canberra then we wouldn't have given it a second thought and just paid it.

How many other people are paying fines that aren't theres I wonder?

Anyway just my suggestion, don't just pay without first checking it.

I know that in the NT they are taken from the front. Got a nice photo of the mighty 80 to prove. Still, $50 and no points, not bad.

My boss received a fine several years ago and questioned it because his car had been out of action after breaking down on the side of the road. He asked for the photo and got a good shot of his car....on the back of the tow truck!

George Orwell mighn't have been too far of the money, I find it pretty scary when the human element (and sensible judgement) get removed from law enforcement.

Makes you wonder where it will end up.

Bad news
I don"t think a GPS would be a good defence, how could you prove that the GPS was in the vehicle when the photo was taken. It could have been in my vehicle doing the speed limit at the time. I am not saying that is what happened but look at it from the other side. How can he prove that the GPS was in his vehicle.

In NSW the old film cameras only take from the rear and are only on one side of the road, as you can easily see from the strips,even though the signs are in both directions..
The new digital cameras take both sides of the road in most cases except when the road is wide, so obviously take coming and going.
The law was changed in Jan 2005 to allow front shots.
Funny the one on Spit hill is a new digital as the old cameras used to take the 30 year old Mercedes buses going uphill fully loaded in peak hour at 80-90 Kmh when 8 or 9Kmh was more accurate. It takes from the front and the RTA doesn't yet require motocycles to have front plates.YET.

In WA the photos are of the front. It is well publicised because the law here does not accept accept rear photos - hence motorcyles don't get caught. There has been a lot of press on it in papers and TV in recent years.

did you hear the story of a woman and her husband driving oneday and they went through a camera that flashed them...after having an arguement about the speed the lady was driving at they decided to do a "u" turn and go a little slower this time....again the camera went off....again after another arguement they went through for a 3rd time even slower than the last, well under the limit and again the camera flashed....3 weeks later the lady recieved 3 fines for not wearing a seat belt that the camera had detected!!!

moral to the story......seat belts save lives ...speed camera's just slow people down for that split moment across the lines!!

they get us departing but some do still get us arriving!
