Overnight via Fraser Island

Hi There,

Almost ready to depart via Fraser on Saturday, but plan to do an overnight stop just before taking the barge.

My question is, what would people recomend for an overnighter around the rainbow beach area? Caravan Park in Rainbow beach? Freshwater camp? Inskip Point?

Any view appreciated.

Cheers,

Henry.-

Depends which way you're travelling.
If coming up the beach from Noosa then Freshwater is OK.
If by road from Gympie then Inskip Pt.

I'd probably do Inskip anyway as then you can get the first barge across, but then agian, it all depends on the tide.

I'd be wary of the rocks at Rainbow after the current big seas. Probably better to go via Gympie.

Just be real mindful of the weather at the moment if you're not already in SE QLD. We're just north of Brissy and there's reports of 200-300mm of rain predicted in the next 2-3 days, and with the low pressure system moving down the coast they're also warning of some big storm surges!! Be careful mate - tides could be bigger than predicted. Hope it clears up for you quick! ;-)

Hi Evila, Totally agree with MrBitchi however, if the tides are favourable, the beach run up Teewah & Rainbow is great, but I'd still stop-over at Inskip to catch the first barge. The last 2 times we were up at Rainbow, the rocks were none-existant and we'll be back there next weekend. Have a good trip.

Last report at dusk indicates that waves are running at 1.5m to 3m on the beaches Indian Heads to Hook Point. Some sections of beach have disappeared and there has already been some dune damge from the higher than normal tides. Tonight is expected to get worse as the low moves southwest towards the coast.
Take care.

Hi Guys...

Thanks for the warning.... we don't plan to arrive to QLD until monday anyway(comming from Melbourne) , but have now delayed the cross to Fraser Island until the 13... hopefully in a week everithing should be back to normal...

In the overnight issue, it appears to be a matter of horses for courses...

With the people saying (take the first barge)... one thing that worries me, is that tides for the day that I get there are High at 7am and Low at 1pm.... How long after/before high/low tide is it recommended to take the barge?

Cheers,

Henry.-

Your taking the Inskip barge ?? High tide 7am ?? Inskip barges run "on demand" so would suggest 8.30/9.00 am to give you firm sand to drive on and a falling tide gives you more beach , dont forget to drop the tyre pressure !!
