80 series GVM aand GCM

Hi all,
Slow day at work today so I put my 80 series over the new scales. Well, could have knocked me down with a feather. Weighed in at 2840kg with me in the drivers seat. Add my wife and its 2900kg. This is in its normal configuration, ie - 100l of fuel in tanks, bull bar, winch, dual batteries, storage _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx, some recover gear and empty fridge, rear bar and wheel carrier, radios, towbar and some other bits and pieces. No tools, no camping gear, no food etc. Now, my rego papers (NSW) say that;

Tare - 1985kg
GVM - 2960kg
GCM - 3260kg

How on earth can I tow a caravan or even a trailer given that the car with me and the missus weighs 2900kg without any food, bags etc.. That means I only have 360kg spare (towing) or 60kg not towing. Will have to get a damn light trailer but what about the camping gear and my BEER???? If the ball weight on the trailer is greater than 60kg I could be in deep sh*t!! Surely the rego papers must be wrong.

Was thinking of contacting the RTA but if the Motor Vehicle Tax ($305) is calculated on GVM or GCM for rego - heck, they'll up the rego fee! Can someone in NSW check their rego papers to see if this is the same?

Currently I tow an off road trailer that weighs just over 1000kg loaded so turns out I have been overload each time. Glad I haven't had a insurance incident or met a RTA inspector on a bad day.

Welcome to the real world ;-)), most 4wd's are over GVM when setup with accessories and a bit of gear in them.
My troopy used to weigh around nearly 4t, full of fuel, water, camping gear, 5 bods and all the rest of the stuff for a month away from town.
The Humvee is right on GVM loaded with shippshape and two bods, 240l fuel, 60l water, frig tucker etc etc

Problem is, if these figuires are correct, then even using the tare weight, then towing a caravan of 1300kg which is only an on road about 15ft, would put the GCM right up there. There must be something wrong here.

Could be potential for the next police revenue raiser, just have to come up with a device the weigh & fine each vehicle, extra weight takes longer to stop ,LOL

If you mean the police have to come up with a way to weigh the vehicle, then they already do have a way in NSW and other states. It is not often realized but in NSW the RTA inspectors can weigh a car travelling on a public road. They do it with heavy transport and they do have the authority to check cars as well (any road registered vehicle). Might not happen very often but has happened. A blitz was carried out on the Pacific Highway in my home town several years ago and cars towing even box trailers were being checked. Once I was at a public weigh bridge to weigh the truck (semi) I was driving. As I was leaving the 'mermaids' escorted in a car and carvan combo. I didn't hang around to find out the outcome because if they could be bothered to do that then I'm sure they would have 'found' something wrong with the truck I was driving.

I don't have the specs for an 80 series but a 100 series GXL diesel from Toyota's brochure is:
Tare/kerb weight 2394kg, GVM 3180kg no GCM on brochure
A 60 series GXL diesel is 2160kg and GVM is 2810kg
so the figures quoted for an 80 series are probably correct as theya re midway between the two

Remember too that the tare weight given for new vehicles is a dry production weight, no fluids (oil, coolant, fuel etc) and probably doesn't include jack, tools and spare wheel/tyre.
Definitely doesn't include aircon (if it is fitted before delivery as most Topyota's are) or any other accessories.
So in the 100 series example above what appears to be a carrying capacity of 780 kg may in fact be considerably less.
If you take a modified or converted vehicle for rego you get a weighbridge ticket for the tare or kerb weight which includes all fluids and anything in or on the vehicle.

So your 80 is pretty light eh? I weighed mine on my own with a very light load and it weighed more than my cruiser campervan carrying a hamburger with the lot about 3 tonne. 80s have a lump of lead stuck in them somewhere
