Cooper Highway Terrain vs Grandtreks

Submitted: Saturday, Apr 01, 2006 at 22:24

RichieK

My Grandtreks are up for replacement - contemplating Cooper H/T's - anyone with experience of these? Any other recommendations?

I already have spare set of rims with Wrangler AT/Rs so I don't need the Coopers/whatever I decide upon to be very offroad-biased - just want long life, low rolling resistance and reasonable handling.

Cheers and beers

What car are they on? Grandtreks normally on Prados/Landcruisers...
If so have a look also at Bridgestones D694 - very good tire compared to
crappy Grandtrecks....

Yes its a Prado. I want to stay with a highway terrain tyre, already have a set of Wrangler A/TRs on spare rims that I throw on when I do an off road trip, otherwise, its a city car and I want a tyre that handles better than an A/T. I've found the Grandtreks to be far from crappy, have gotten thru some very slippery mud without drama and they have been great on-road, just thought I'd try something different..

Interesting list! It is the Grandtrek AT/20 that comes in at 62, the ones on most Prados (TG35) including mine is at 33 - not so bad... but at least the list gives a heap of other alternatives to try and source -so thanks Stan! I'm still waiting to hear from anyone with Cooper H/T experience....

Interesting link ...... I was surprised to see how well Firestone rated, after the debacle I had with Cooper STs, I vowed I wouldn't spend that sort of money on tyres again & fitted Firestone Firehawk RMTs @ $175 each, & I couldn't be happier!
They do everything the Coopers did with no chipping or lug tearing.

Thanks Pedro - I guess I have nothing to compare them to in the ROAD tyre area, only my Wrangler AT/R's (noisy, lumpy and squirmy on bitumen roads, not too confidence-inspiring in the wet) which I am saving for the dirty stuff. I did read a review somewhere yonks ago praising the Grandtreks as a very underrated tyre, very good on-road and surprisingly effective off road - I have to agree. Maybe I don't get quite far enough off-road but I have been up some pretty crappy, muddy tracks that had the Prado slipping around a fair bit but at no time did it look like I was gonna get stuck. If I'm gonna do a trip where I will expect more slippery stuff, i will throw on the AT/Rs. At the moment, I just want something for the city/freeway miles...

I know you said you have some other AT's but I would still consider Cooper ATR. I have these on my 120 Prado and they are great for onroad use as well as being reasonable offroad. Would be a real PITA changing them over for every time you wanted to go on a gravel road! My ATR's have now done near 30,000km and have lost only about 2-3mm of 11mm tread. Should last 70 to 80 thousand. Seem to handle wet roads better than my previous Cooper A/T and are very quiet.

I eventually aim to be running ATR as the daily driver tyre and STT's on a spare set of rims for more serious trips.

Just my opinion!

Cheers

Hiya Muddy - are they really that good on road? In the wet? I have 3 kids and a wife that I really want to keep around me for years to come... I'm would even consider something along the lines of what gets fitted to ML series Mercs etc - as you can see I want a ROAD (i.e. bitumen) tyre as opposed to an OFF-ROAD tyre. But I'm not ruling anything out yet! I may end up with the Cooper AT/R's, as long as I KNOW they are a great ROAD tyre.

Hey Muddy - I just checked out the Cooper website and I think I jumped the gun - I was expecting the AT/R to be much closer to the S/T range. My apologies for being hasty - I will try and check them out - thanks again

No Worries,

I got them as a good allrounder. I had Cooper A/T (and they were good) but the ATR was a new pattern and are much better. I have hit an inch of water at freeway speed (unexpected patch of water on the freeway) and they did not aquaplane or lose direction and I was able to pull up OK so I was most happy. They are smooth and quiet on the road and I would definately buy them again. Just that bit tougher than a H/T but not all that agressive so are still a good road tyre.

Hi Muddy

I've taken the plunge and bought the Cooper AT/Rs, have only driven them in the city for about 15k's so far but they seem to handle very well, turning into corners nicely, quiet, good ride etc etc...

Thanks for the advice.

Cheers

Maybe consider the Toyo Opats. Got a high rating for on road ability in a recent 4wd monthly comparision. BTW, agree with them as I run them on my Pajero. Not too noisey & have better grip on wet bitumen than all other A/T's I've driven on. Have the 265/70/16P & have done over 20000k & wear is excellent. I also have spare rims with muddies, but can be a PITA to change over when only doing some easy 4wding. Have found the OPATS to be more than adequate for basic off road stuff.

Just took a pair of opats off the pajero. 68,000k. Grip as good as the coopers but better milage, only got 55,000k off the cooper ATs. And cheaper, got them for $180.00 three years ago. I do push it in the corners.
New price though is a lot higher. So gone for Simex road trekkers, $145.00.

G'Day Rich,
IMHO stick with the Grandtreks. If you want good handling, quite, road-biased tyres, but still want to go dirt track now and then, I do'nt think you'll get any better. I have a 120 Prado which is used mainly for on-road towing and I car'nt fault them. I've just replaced them with another a set. The old ones went 85,000. They were rotated every 10,000, and wore perfectly. I have no complaints. If you want a serious off-road tyre ..... then look at the other makes.

Capt.

following this and other threads on tyres for 120 prado with great interest as I am well overdue for replacing the Grandtrecks that came with mine. I am in absolute awe of anyone that can make them last 85,000: I rotate through the 5 tyres religiously at 10,000K; keet their pressures to specs and do mostly highway miles towing a camper trailer or a float. I got about 43,000 out of them. Agree that they gave a good ride at the beginning but would expect much better mileage for the price. Am currently looking at Toyo Opats as a good price, performance& durability compromise.

Have opted for Cooper AT/Rs...they seem to handle better on road (albeit city roads) than the Grandtreks (albeit worn Grandtreks) so I'm happy with my choice so far! Makes me wish I'd gone for the Wrangler MT/Rs instead of Wrangler AT/Rs for my spare set of rims..oh well...

Now all I gotta do is get some dirt on them..
