...Also after some advice and good ideas on home made awnings that mount on the side of roofracks. If anyone has some hints or site links it would be appreciated.

Don't know any specific manufacturers, I suggest asking around and finding the best custom Canvas place near you and get them to make up exactly what you want. I was pleasantly surprised with the price of what I wanted.

I like the sound of it - I haven't bought the one I was thinking about. One question though - the awning you refer to - how easy is it to either remove from the vehicle or pack up if you plan on remaining in camp, but need to drive someplace?

I made mine myself, I got some RHS and some SAIL TRACK I then ran a length of sail track along one side of the RHS. Then I took it to the local canvas bloke for him to make up the awning. He used a material called TARPOL not rip vinyl which came out 3 metres from the car. He also made up a bag for which you roll the awning up into and 3 pole holes all up it cost about $250.

Theres a place in Mansfield Vic that makes a pullout awning out of canvas.

Mounts to the roofrack, fully removable, so you can store it in the car IF you want, or leave it on the truck!!

It uses 2 poles and 4 ropes(well thats what we used) to hold stable.. It was like the ones on a house that pull down to shade the sun but no metal side poles, just the canvas.

They will make it to your requirements of side or rear of truck.... Mate has one on his 78 series Troopy.. Also has sides that Press stud on, to make a full shelter.

We were on top of some mountain in Snow up Woods Point, and stayed Dry adn warm out of the wind.

Cost $190 last time I called 3 odd months ago.

Those 'things' are a sad / pathetic copy of 'our' Aussie Traveller units... would appreciate if all you sales jockeys got off your monitors and had a look/ travelled around and used some of the gear you reckon is bleep hot....stop promoting this imported crap that is cheap, nasty-except in the showroom , and not up to it in the Aussie bush...

Steve, dont be offended, no recommendation was made, simply a URL that I had found. I also checked out www.aussietraveller.com.au, not just opensky. I have seen the opensky awning and it looks fine to me $495 as against $585 (yes I rang and checked as I am also looking for one). At the end of the day the options are buy a made up one like these 2 or whatever else is on the market or have one made. I do get up from my monitor, do travel and do think you should pull your head in. The guy asked a question, to which I rarely answer because of flack from people like you. The fact that you are so partial to "your" Aussie Travellers probably wont sit too well with most of us "sales jockeys" either. You should try selling your unit through the business search engine and an ad on ExplorOz rather than mining the chat rooms anyway. If you do a deal on exploroz right now, you might even get a couple of sales since at least 2 of us are looking....:-)

Chris, you can do a very simple home-made version by fixing some sail track to a length of box-section aluminium (preferrably 3mm) and fixing that to the side of your rack/cage. A piece of 10oz canvas doubled-seamed all the way around, a couple of re-inforced eyelettes at the front corners, and you're on your way. You'll want some way of preventing the canvas from sliding in the sail track in a blow and when travelling. A couple of ties along the length will keep it securely rolled up, though not protected, when travelling.

If you are in, or near Sydney, a place called Pro Trim in Dee Why make an excellent awning that can include side and front walls for a completely enclosed annex. They did the canvas work for our camper-trailer and its very good quality.

We live in Perth and got an awning made from rip stop canvas by the local canvas guy in Byford, came with the alloy caravan rail and in a zip up bag so it can stay on your vehicle or you can take it off up to you. All we had to do was buy a couple of tent poles and ropes. All up it cost us about $150. Give him a ring his name is Adrian and his business is called Izmyn Byford Canvas ph: 9525-0212 tell him Martin from Hatt Transport told you to ring him.

Try a caravan spares/accserrories shop. They have all types of retractable awnings that could be adapted to use one roofracks.

There is a shop in Ferntreegully road Mt gate in melbourne (I think it is called Award. Not sure) I went in there last week as i saw a sign out front that they were having a sale on engel, evacool and waeco fridges. The amount of other stuff in there that could be used on a 4wd was amazing
