Unspirited QLD'rs

Went out to lock the hubs in today with a few of the regulars on this forum, but found out too late (like this morning) that earlier this week a few other qld'rs wanted to do just this. My appologies to those concerned, it was all a bit "at the last minute" type thing. Regardless those that did go, I'm sure will agree, enjoyed themselves immensely. Only one sidestep being the casualty, so you got to be happy with that. We won't talk about Pezza's winching technique, will we Pezz.

Anyway for any other QLD'rs interested in future outings, if you respond to this post, I will keep your details and try to give you a bit of notice for the next one. Which is hopefully soon. Vice versa, keep me in mind if you are planning something similar yourself and want company.

Thanks Bob for supplying an enourmous amount of entertainment with that overgrown rice bubble of yours in proving it's capabilities are certainly not to be under estimated.
Mark and Jo, I really feel for you guys being the only ones to sustain any damage, I know it was only a side step, but damage nevertheless, and still a cost factor which I know you guys are very conscious of at the moment. You still amaze me with your ability and determination for someone who has never driven a 4by till a couple of months ago, well done again!
My appologies along with Trevors to those QLDers who were looking for a weekend out, but I haven't had a whole lot of time on the forum lately and usually just skim over the days latest and missed those posts completely, was only aware of them when it was mentioned this morning.
We will certainly make sure you are notified for the next one.

We knew nothing about it until the last minute as well. :-))
We were down around the back of Springfield Lakes area in Brissy's Southside.
Greg.S (great bloke and family) is up Maryborough way so he would be the closest to you (that I'm aware of) to organise a day out, I will Member Message him and tell him of your interest.
The next day out should be made aware of to this site by me or Pezza, (in the Gatherings section) so all interested can plan ahead if they want to come.

Guys, it looks like you had some great fun there but a couple of things struck me looking at the pictures. The first one of these is the steepness of the actual terrain actulally has come out fairly well, but I assume that. The other is the tyre pressures look like road pressures.

Am I wrong in those assumptions
1 the terrain?
2 the tyre pressures? When I have been in the Vic High Country with stone and mud or the Otways where muddy conditions can prevail or in the Pyrenees with the stone base I have always aired down nearly as much as hard sand where you may get some softness. It will give a lot more traction and overcome the immediate need for winch use.

Yeah I noticed that too! The steepness that is! I can rarely capture the steepness of the terrain my mates and I drive on in the photos! Was it a special technique or was it just REEEAAALLLY steep? haha!

Yes some sections were quite steep, but we did air down. Where Pezza needed the winch was only faint tyre tracks leading to nowhere and he was down to about 22PSI off memory (Pezz correct me if I'm wrong) the rest of the run was quite rocky and not needing less air than we were running.
That is a good point for those not in the know though, tyre pressure (or lack there of) can play a big part in how far you get.

The tyres didn't appear in the photos to have bagged much to get the longer tread contact. You could have gone down further - much further for the weight of the vehicle obviously. I have the fronts of Moses at about 16psi and the rears at 18-22psi because of the weight carrying and distribution. Not that I know much about tyres relatively speaking, just that there is no danger at the lower speeds. There is a lot positive about the lack of slip, lower impact driving. In very soft sand just below 10psi in the fronts. I guess that the pressure guages get pretty inaccurtate at that level though.

It is the contact length rather than the width that is the benefit on gravel, sand and unstable rock.

Thanks heaps, we had a great day as per usual with you all, (except for the thumping of my headache... had it since the day before but did you think that would stop me from coming.... I don't think so!)
Andrew you did an awesome job with the photos, We all really appreciate what you did!
As for the side step.... nothing a hammer, drill and if necessary an angle grinder can't fix!!!!
See now that is what happens when you go and play without a lift kit!
But we nearly did make it!
Will have to start my Dear Santa letters early this year!

Anyone who asks us about it Trev, we'll just tell them a chicken did it!

Try saying it in a standard Pajero with standard alloy sidesteps (I'm sure you would be saying it more often hahaha). Mark is actually a really good driver and more damage would have come from his efforts with a lesser driver.

Mark is liking the thought of what you or Perry I think it was that said about ditching the steps alltogether and putting some metal piping or something underneath? Mark is a handy guy, if he got his hands on a welder or someone who could do a better job at it than him he would do it himself. Andrew you'd definately have to be around with the camera for that!

You took a pair of pliers to yours hey Trev? I saw it there but thought that was already there from when we were at Imbil.

Certainly would have been a sight to see Bob go it.... Suzi would have just bounced on up! but certainly with more damage than a crushed side step!
But oh what a sight that would have been, an absolute 'Kodak' moment!.

lots of guys build their own tube steps,,, just make sure you use 4mm minimum (6mm would be better) tube for strength!!

The maps are full of info..... for me they have too much info on 'em, but that's just an opinion. We did the easy loop up to the lookout, then back down towards the front, dropped ontp Jeepers Descent, missed the medium loop but found the Gorge Loop quite fun! Lunch at another lookout, it was a good day!

He didn't feel at the top of his game yesterday with the meds that the Doc put him on, but that wasn't going to stop him from playing!!!
