Before you get to Chambers Pillar you have to cross the Hugh River. It is sandy and can be a problem sometimes.

Like with anything you do in sand. Keep your tyre pressures down (20psi or less on tow vehicle and 15psi or less on trailer) and you shouldnt have hassles. If you attempt sand driving and towing with higher tyre pressures you may give yourself some grief.

As mentioned above. What sort of tow vehicle? That could make or break the trip.

Hi Bartz,

Chambers is a walk in the park, used to be a bit tough with the sand but its now nearly a highway, corrigation is your worse enemy. If you want the easiest way in, go have a look at Rainbow Valley, stay overnight to get the sunset (magic) then drive down the Stuart Highway to the Hugh River Stock Route 24.24.084 133.23.564 This is a very smooth track in, just a few gates is the only bother. Lots of Camels through here so be aware.

why not leave it a couple of weeks and have a sticky at the Finke Desert Race. Not sure if this is your scene but if you enjoy a bit of motor sport its worth a look.

In 2004 we towed our 17ft Evernew van into Maryvale and left it at the station shop while we visited Chambers Pillar, towing a camper trialer right into the pillar shouldn't be a problem though as long as you reduce tyre pressures, the sand hills are smallish. For anyone towing a large/heavy van and wanting to stay in close in to the pillar no problem towing into within 10km of the pillar, (just before the sand hills start there is a steep rocky hill to climb, camp just before that hill in the scrub) get permission from the station to camp in the scrub and do sunup/sundown trip in to get the piccies with the colors on the pillar.
