Starter Battery for a 4.2 TD GU

I currently have the week off work to play trucks and am going through the motions of installing a dual battery system.

What I am wanting to know is what is a reputable make of starter battery that I can use as my Aux. battery (and to replace the dying main Batt.)

I have had a poke through the archives, but given that products change etc, I was hoping for some up to date info (preferably specific to a 4.2 Turbo Diesel Patrol GU)

Short answer, Optima. But, any battery will do, its just that you only get what you pay for. Cheaper brands are around if you believe they are value for money?

I've used Exide Extreme N70EXL (620CCA, 80 Ah) batteries for both my starter and aux. This works well.

What do you want to do with your aux battery?

About $150 or thereabouts

I have two in my truck in parallel through a basic solenoid.

Have just put a similar basic setup in my GU. Do you have any problems starting if the 2nd battery is flat - the solenoid will switch on when the ignition is, will the flat battery take a lot of amps out of th starter battery during cranking?

I haven't flattened the aux battery yet but got close last year when my Rotronics Manager karked it out on the Gary Hwy. I have since fitted a basic solenoid. I also have a switch on the dash to control whether the batteries are in parallel or not.

I replaced my starter motor after the big trip last year and the GQ starts as soon as I turn the key. Maybe half a crank and she's running. I think that the Overlander would crank your GU on its own without trouble.

I'm with Willem - the Century/Yuasa is what I use in the Jack - note the 700CCA - most brands in that common fourbie case case size only have 600CCA - that extra 100 is worth a lot to my situation.

I have had Century/Yuasa 700CCA (Overlander i think they were known as)batteries in my hilux and was happy with them. And if they still seem to be the goods, then i'll continue to use them with the Nissan.

I have a Terracan & it has a 900 cca in it. It is Rocket Brand & is probably not available in Australia, but I wouldn't mind putting two in the Cruiser for the xtra capacity.

If the auxiliary battery is being used to power accessories such as a fridge, NONE.
You should use a deep cycle battery for this purpose, preferably AGM type.

what make and type of battery to replace the dying main battery?
As mentioned the Exide Extreme or Century Overlander are good choices.

The Optima is excellent for both starting and deep cycle work, but the price of this battery is excessive. Plenty of cheaper choices around.

Although the Extreme is also rated as a starter and deep cycle battery (CCA & A/H) I am not convinced. I'm not knocking them, I run one myself as a starter battery, but not keen on cycling these down to 25-30 percent too often. That is where the AGM batteries excel.
