Solo

Hi everyone,

My wife starts long flight home from Cairns on 15/05/03.(unfortunatly).
My plans, go to Cape York & the 'Top', via Cooktown, I will be SOLO,
wondered if any one going my way in May, could accompany, would
like to return via Normanton, Mt Isa and Birdsville with final desternation
Sydney, return Land Rover 110CSW, stay few days then board my
return flight home. I would also like to know, what 'Maps', you all use, have a general HEMA road map, feal its not the best, do you have 'Michelin' in Australia. Want to find the right tracks not the
Autobahns/Motorways!

Rearly appreciate any answers, advice that is helpfull.

Thank you. Cliff Page.

Cliff,

sounds like you are not from Aussie. If this is the case then your best (and safest) bet would be to join a tag along tour for the Cape at the very least.

That way you will be assured of seeing the best spots with good company.

Try it and see.

Good luck anyway.

You'll have no problems avoiding the Autobahns/Motorways in Queensland... there aren't any outside the South East Corner.

I'd suggest you contact Rob at Cairns Offroad Training & Tours. He knows the cape and runs tag-a-longs.

cliff,
depending on your confidence and experience many have done this trip solo. i did it in july 2001. 1 adult with 2 children aged 10 and 12 we had a ball, were experienced and well prepared, along the way met many other travellers.
used - hema cape york map and ron and viv moons book- cape york an adventurers guide both available in the adventure shop in this site.
highly recommend both.
nothing wrong with a tag along generally 6to 8 vehicles finding one to meet your schedule may be hard.
if you get no offers from fellow travellers, re run in a month or two.
or else you cant not meet people on the road.
ps check out cape york in trip reports in this site.
regards peter
