barra man

hi all

I'm new to the forum. Would like to hear from anyone who has installed a Brunswick motor. I'm looking at a 6.5 centre mount turbo for my 3lt Patrol '04.
Looking forward to the feedback.

Regards Barra man

Mate,
Do a search.........bloke in WA did a conversion a few months ago and was very happy with the result. He stuck the 6.5 into a GU which had a blown-up 2.8 motor in it before. There was a lot of interest in it.
Cheers

Yeah,
Bilbo is the guy, he confirmed that he would give us some continuing updates as he put the Ks up on the vehicle. If I recall correctly Bilbo was leaving on an extended prospecting trip. I'm sure we will her from him in due course. His initial impressions were favourable. There is info on Chev. conversions on the Brunswick Diesel site and of course Linquipe for the Queenslanders. Have no doubt there are others but I've not been able to find them todate.

I think it was a post by Bilbo.

They have a very good reputation here in WA. Could also try Robson Brothers in Belmont (I think) - they also have a very good name in the 4WD scene here.

Hope this helps.

the easiest thing to do would be just to ring them up, im currently looking at the same option & was quoted around 20 ish for it!

if u after the turbo the patrol needs a body lift of at least 1 intch to be able to fit the turbo on it, where as the land cruiser has more space in its engine bay & does not require the body lift!

V8 Troopie replied:

Is the extra complexity of a turbo really what you want? You'll find the straight 6.5 has plenty enough grunt unless you want to compete and to hell with fuel consumption.
I have a Brunswick 6.2 under the bonnet of the troopie, lots of grunt to tow a large boat of about 3 ton aggregate. Convertion was done about 80,000km ago, still running fine.

Make sure your cooling system is up to scratch, my 16yo radiator finally has given up which saved me a lot of fuel as I had to stay under 80kmh from Shark Bay to Perth to keep the beast cool. No problems without a trailer though, it seems these cooling problems only show when the load increases and it always happens on a holiday :-(

I am also curious as to why you would do this to a two year old vehicle???
I am sure there is people who need to have it done. I only wish I could justify doing it to my 5yr old truck but mmmmm nope.

Bilbo replied:

Hi,

Yep - Bilbo is back from the wilds of the W.A. Goldfeilds. Not a very profotable trip but in spite of a back injury and a few other distractions, it was great test for the Brunswick engine and myself - after a 4 years absence from the game.

See my seperate post on how "Frodo the Fire Engine" went in the bush.

Im kind of curious as to how they can charge $20000 + for a conversion when the donor engines are worth about $6500 on the market.
I converted my landcruiser from petrol to landcruiser diesel and there sure wasnt $14000 worth of labour.
I spoke to Brunswick diesels about 3 years ago and they quoted me $13000 inc engine. Seems to have gone up some since then.

Yeah ross,

I was quoted $14 - 15K 5 years ago...admittedly was a 6.2.

The 6.5's all seem to be 18K Plus?

lovely engines....but I could never afford to have one converted myself.

Truckster (Vic) posted:

With the auto, you need that beefed up, you need the Chev alternator, and different water pump, bigger radiator, (there were a stack of things), plus they are fully reconditioned engines, not just out of the truck with 300,000 on em.

I agree its pretty rich, I was expecting drive away $15-18k and I would have done it, but when the "Special" price was $23k, I laughed.

Hi to all & thankyou for the responses, to answer you in detail
1. Roachie - did the search , thanks
2. Karl - They do have a good name , couldn't find a bad word at all.
3. Klaus - 6.5 centre mount , all or nothing.Kit comes with a larger radiator.
4. Adamj 1300 - I've spoken to them & they side mount the Tuurbo , then it can be
done without a lift kit.
5. Truckster- nothing wrong the 3ltr (175,000K ), too much money to spend.
6. Bilbo - Good to hear yours is going so well. I've ordered mine now & they start in 2 wks.
