Nissan Patrol 4.8 LPG Conversion

Hi,
I am considering putting my 4.8lt Patrol on LPG. Could anyone give me advise when converting to gas, also if anyone has a 4.8lt on gas what do they think of the performance, economy, reliability and what brand conversion was done.

Any feed back is appreciated.

As a gas fitter myself i would only recommend an IMPCO system use a 425 mixer and a converter to suit either a impco 'L' or an aussie made B2 both are fantastic .Not sure on the economy but power and reliabilty are equal to petrol with this system.

Fitting a vapour system is like going back to stongberg carbies . The technology is way behind . What you want is a injected system. No power loss , sometimes even a power gain on gas. You also get 100 further on the same amount on gas. Make sure you pick the right system, there are some doggy set ups out there. Best person and set up is Progas in Huntingdale ask for Auther. Tell him Eric refured you for a discounted price.

Sell it and buy a diesel. As a mechanic that fits gas, this is my best sugestion. Just kidding!! We recently fitted an Impco system to a 4.8lt patrol i think it cost about $3500. they r a nice neat system, they dont go out of tune like some other brands do. They are easily repairable (you will occasionally need the convertor cleaned out with the poor quality gas that is around these days) Hope this helps with your decision

Still don't feel any overwhelming urge to put mine on gas, basically I love having >1000km range on petrol - but from research I have done I have had plenty of warnings from Nissan dealers about valve damage, so I'd do what I could to ensure that this area was looked after.

I mean beyond the standard phrases of - "yes our system starts on petrol and switches to gas so no problems"

No I set my car up pretty carefully but it has 180lt fuel capacity (145lt main) so 1000km is fairly easy including some 4wding.

I have logged every bit of fuel run through it and over 110,000 it has averaged
16.5lt/100k , it can do under 15 on the highway at a steady 100 , but its not as good as the auto's there.

More importantly , I recently had a uni-chip espically tuned for desert conditions , which isn't as good as my normal set up but on our recent north simpson crossing
we used only 24lt/100km in the real rough, only 20% more than a warmed up 4.2 gu with us, and it was a clearly better car to tackle the situation.

Not particularly, I use 235/85/16 tyres mostly around town , 255/85 on trips
keep presures up > 40psi.

Its a manual, use only synthetic oils , advanced to top of allowable range.

Drive to speed limit don't care much if someone takes off in front of me at lights,

Limit myself to one traffic light race per day - usually Cruiser or smart postie van.

I have a 4.8 patrol on gas and will never do it again. Heaps of trouble. Catalytic converter burnt out halfway across Nullabor. (Common problem). Never quite right. Every time the car is mechanically serviced the gas is all up the creek. Problems getting a full fill on a hot day. (which is normally out woop woop where you need as much as you can get). I have the 75 litre fuel tank but as they are so thirsty you have limited range where there is no gas. Ask around and you will find that the 4.8's just don't like Gas. I found out after I had mine fitted!!!!

Don't know much about the Gas injection, it might be better. By the way mine is an Impco System. I am looking at getting rid of it and getting a diesel.

Just to follow up $3500 for IMPCO is to exspensive shop around should get it cheaper than that but make sure they are an authorised IMPCO installer.
If you can aford VAPOUR INJECTION this is the way to go ..

Their are not many IMPCO installers that know exactly how the Impco system works nor how to set it up correctly use one of the above and you wont have a problem..
