cruise controls

Nick R

I'll start by saying "I did the search"

I'm keen to know what cruise control models people have fitted to their GU patrols with the 4.2 turbo motors?

A guy tried to sell me a Command AP500 but it was a bit pricey. It looks to me that an AP 60 would do fine at less than 1/2 the price.
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance,
NickR
ps.
I'm sick of speeding tickets for being a poofteenth over the limit thanks bracksy......

Hi Nick,
Been running an AP50 for the last 5 yrs or so on my GU turbo, no probs. Only criticism is that the magnets on the tailshaft can be an issue, both in being knocked off, and the signal being lost over rough roads, incl bitumen, causing dropouts. The unit performs well otherwise. I've posted a circuit of a mod to get around the magnets on the Yahoo Patrol website (think it's still there, haven't checked for a couple of years).

Try this if you have magnet adhesion problems:
1. forget the tailshaft, use the transfer box output flange instead to affix the magnets. It does not bounce about like the tailshaft.
2. file two little flat spots 180 deg apart to give the magnets a very good adhesion, use high strength epoxy glue and scrupulously clean flange and magnets with acetone before glueing.
3. use the metal caps & tie wires supplied to give the magnets additional mechanical support.

The above method has held well so far on my troopie, No I have to look and see what alternative method to get a signal you came up with on that yahoo site.

Klaus,
Yeh, looked at that, but on the Patrol there is a large handbrake drum, with the flange not really accessible, and it's not an easy solution. The electronic solution is to use the speedo pickup (wiring found in the engine bay) and a relatively simple electronic interface to the AP50. Nice and reliable.
But for the Troopie, your solution is probably simpler.
But where I've fitted the unit to other machines, I have roughend the metal surface, slopped araldite between the magnets, plus smeared araldite over the wires which hold the magnets on. Pretty reliable. But even when I did this with the Patrol, gearbox/tailshaft shake on rough bitumen caused the magnets to drift too far from the pickup to cause momentary signal loss, and dropout on the AP50.

Mike, have MM'd you about Nick's contact details. He says he would take that thanks.

PJ, this is the older style better for the throttle systems rather than drive by wire. Perhaps AP150 listed at Site Link

I installed the AP150 last year in my TD42T. Couldn't be happier!@! Speed sensing is done from a "tap", off the sense wire in the dashboard. No magnets to worry about!!

I tried one of the vacuum systems on my 3 litre and it failed badly. Nowhere near enough grunt to pull the pedal. The motorised one I think is AP500 is the better one. The best of course is the autron however it is near impossible to get here in the north.

My brother fitted an AP 50 to his 1991 4.2 D (non turbo) patrol a couple of years ago and loves it hasn't given him any problems. I picked one up 2 weeks ago from KMART for $118 reduced from $209 as they are now a deleated stock item, im hoping to fit it to my 1999 4.2 D patrol (non turbo), unfortunatley little bro. has just moved up north so im going to have to fit it myself (bummer).Bro. said it wasnt hard to fit just fiddely - after looking at instructions im getting "cold feet". Are there any problems fitting that I should know about?
appriciate advice.
sorry to hijack Nick
