We used to go there heaps for picnics when the kids were much younger & we lived in Murray Bridge. It was just an un-marked location then. The work Commodore had no problems. Then the gorge got 'closed' and we had to find another picnic spot(s). Just a bit further down the creek is quite OK for a small BBQ.
We had spots around Punthari, Black Hill, Cambrai, Harrogate, etc, that were favourites also. (it's not cool to do that picnicing stuff now that we live in Adelaide..........)

However, maybe the route is now actually a 4 wd route over differnt land, as opposed to the former 2wd public access?

Low range was also used coming down a few hills also (rather than have the brakes glowing red in High range). As you say, our options are few and this is definately worth a drive. Don't expect a Warraweena or Skytrek but it is good fun and close to Adelaide for just a day outing.
We left home at 9am, took our time on the drive including lunch and got home in time for dinner. Can't complain about that!! Cheers,
