What type of gas mixer is right?

Hi Guys,

Just looking at perhaps changing over my gas mixer as am not getting the 'best' fuel economy outta my FJ62 getting about 200km out of 65L of LPG.

It currently has a Impco 225 gas mixer in it, the gas has not been the same since i ran outta gas and it back fired, so im guessing its blown something to bits in the mixer? am i right or would it have damaged something else?

So basically i looked on ebay for my mixer and found that there are HEAPS of different types.. Some say suitable to V8's and 4WD's etc etc... Does it matter what model you have? What is the difference between say a 435 impco and my 225 impco?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys

Justin

You may have damaged your Air flow meter with the backfire.

This is what happened when mine backfired.

Can't help with your query but if you are near Brisbane give Metropolitan autogas at Albion a ring on 3 256 0333; they are the Imco specialists.

Peter,

So the airflow meter if damaged could be telling the mixer to use more gas than it actually 'needs' to?

The car has only ever got 240km of 65L of gas since ive had it... I thought it was normal until i spoke to people and they were getting 350km minimum outta there tanks in the same car. I have had everything else done known to man...

Thanks

Justin

You must have the smaller tank. I thought most conversions had 90 or 95 usable.

have u gone to see your local lpg guru? but if u replace ur old 225 mixer with a new one things should be just fine. there is no need to use a bigger mixer, the 225 is big enough to use on a V8. you mmight also fin the diaphragm inside the mixer is damaged and is all you need to replace. But if it has done a few kays they tend to wear inside the cone.

Andrew thanks for your reply,

I havnt been to any LPG specialist because they are all booked up solid for a few months and they wont even have a look at my car... :( even though they did the orgiinal install...

Yeah look the mixer was last replaced in '04 so im guessing its done about 60,000 since then...

Worth just replacing it?

It should be fine after 60,000 i was thinking 150,000 and it would be worn. Depends on what condition it is in and how many kays its done. Cant remember what a new one is worth, i will have a look at work tomorrow. But i think about $200 ish. also there is 2 types of 225 mixers, there is a feedback and a clean air type. the part number will either have FB or CA in the part number. They r not hard to fit if u want to do it ursef, just set the power vavle in the same spot as the old one and it will be close enough

Andrew, cant see any part number marked on the mixer but on the converter it said Model H, which i noticed it different to the one the guy on ebay is selling which is marked 'Model L' what is the difference with that?

The mixer looks pretty identical to the one i currently have in my car just sits on the air intake

What brand is your current convertor? I have never heard of a H convertor. Impco make a J, L and E convertor.

The car when it not driven for a few hours will not start on gas :-(

This GAS IS REALLY annoying me, its almost more hastles than its worth..

Anyone else agree?

I agree gas can be more hastles than the savings u get. The hard starting problem when it is cold is the fact the convertor is full of wax from the poor quality gas. the ebay items will fix all that. An L convertor and CA225 mixer is right for your car.

Hi Andrew,

When you say there is a build up of wax, that would be in my converter yeah?

If so, how would i go about cleaning it?

I would assume you would disconnect it all and pour hot water through it all?

If anyone else knows how to clean them out would be a great help, i didnt win that mixer and converter on ebay went for too much in my opinion.

As far as economy is concerned who did the tuning?

You can tune for economy OR power and there is a heap of differance in fuel consumption between the two!

Hi Kiwi,

My local mechanic tuned the car... I do believe it was trying to get a bit more power out of it... But power is good, i can live with losing 50km???? if i get that much more power out of her, she flies now..

Would it be around 50km difference between tuning for economy or power?

Cipher,
Spoke to Scott at Metropolitan Autogas in Brisbane and told him about the backfiring.

He said it would be an ignition problem and not the gas.

Told him you might ring (07 32560333) and he said that would be ok.

With my Impco I get about the 360 mark on 90 litres but like you only got 250 until Scott discovered the converter was upside down and a few other items had been installed incorrectly.

If you don't want to ring Brisbane would suggest you contact your local State Imco representative and talk to him.

As a matter of interest check out the history of my backfiring problem link here for backfiring thread and you will see Scott was recommended to me by cabbageoz 16/10/05.

Prior to Scott looking at system I had had fuel consumption problems link here similar to yours.

Valve Clearance is another thing you may need to get checked.

Forgot to mention too that the mixer I had replaced by one crowd turned out to be a non genuine Impco although I was charged $200+ for it.
Scott made some adjustments and when it plays up again he will fit a genuine part.

Hi again Cipher,

Sorry I don't know the difference in gas consumption it's a long time now since I had a duel fuel vehicle but I do know if I tuned for power the vehicle guzzeled gas.
Also, if tuned for power output the vehicle wouldn't run on petrol. Best power settings on gas (timing / dwell etc.) made starting & running on petrol real difficult. A duel curve ignition systems will even it out.
