we turned right at Yunta in 2005 and went acros to Wilpena pound via Martins well and the road was no problem at all. We were towing our goldstream off road camper and did not have any problems. Mind you the road conditioners can change from week to week so take my advice with this in mind.
We left Broken hill in the morning and made camp at Martins well in the afternoon and then got to Wilpena pound the next day. Beautiful country and drive up to pugilist lookout the view is preety good :)

Have used that road several times in the last couple of yrs. Found the road to be good at all times. Why not go from the Hill directly to Wilpena? Leaving the Hill by 7.30 am should see you in Wilpena around 2ish - allowing for several small breaks due to the kids,

I'm traveling first weekend of the October school holidays and have been looking for alternatives too. I've done a bit of homework and posted similar question over at overlander.com.au and seems as mentioned above that the roads are all good when dry. I'm camping in Brachina Gorge so will be going via Martins Well. I don't expect it to save much time though

Hi dave, i am from Broken Hill too and did this route in october lats year. The road was great and i would suspect that it would be like the roads around here after rain. A point of interest ( to me anyway) was the old gold mines about 80 - 100 kays from yunta. They are on the right, you wont miss them. Of particular interest was the stonework of the old pub and the smelter chimney (simular to daydream). A very nice drive the whole way and would recommend it any day over the bitumen route. Have fun!!!

I live a couple of hundred kiolmetres south of Yunta.

I have now reloaded a plot file for a route between Yunta and Rawnsley Park. Follows Martins Well road until north of Waukaringa, then veers to NW. Scenic drive, especially northern half, BUT dry weather only. Suitable for off road trailers and about 4 gates for added excitement!

I do recommend it and iot will bring you out on the Hawker to Wilpena road about 10kms north of Hwaker.

Apologies I wa referring to an OzieExplorer format also available on Exploroz. Without being comoputer literate you will be ablte to go to the Exploroz Plot File site and view the map. Prinouts require you to hold a credit in point place credits.

If this is not on I can probably e-mail / snail map a copy of the map for reference? to you?

I am not an expert on tyres. Here we use LT's and deflate 10% on theFlinder's surfaces - that is alteast my preference.

Let me know re the map.
