how to improve 80 series.

I refer to my previous post 35422 and a follow up in which I list the accessories I am fitting. I had some great reply's advising improvements such as 100 series brake pads etc. I am keen to hear from anyone with 80 series who can offer advise on what to do to improve her. "There is no substitute for experience".

One thing I did recently was to adjust the ignition timing as described here.

It seems to have made a big difference to low end performance and has dropped my fuel consumption from 22l/100km to 19l/100km. Well worthwhile.

HI , Just to comment two 80srs diesels fitted on two different days,both owners came back after testing to comment indipendantly,at the Toowoomba Expo. The hill outside the showground I used to go over it in third gear but now go over in fourth with ease,this related purely from owners reports.IMPROVMENT to 80srs.

Longer range tank
Rear wheel carrier
Diff locks (exe but well worth it if you want to pull stumps)

Keep speed slightly under 100 and steady (improves economy no end)
If diesel , get injectors done
What model ? If DX or standard buy map pockets for storage...great
Replace standard seats with buckets from GXL
Add console from GXL
If not fitted, grab a headlight reminder from Trikky Dikky...around $10 !
Fit a low water alarm ...can save motor (big $$$)
Now you can argue all you like about these "improvements"
I've certainly found them to be worthwhile...yep, done all of em.

Raise the 80 up a couple of inches and get either a rear wheel carrier or a roof rack as the spare acts as a great anchor in sand, desert etc andremoving same from underneath greatly improves mobility.

I also have a homemade water tank under the left side (about 20litres) useful for washing hands etc.

Also have a rack hanging from the seat belt anchorages that is used for soft items (coats, pillows, towels togs etc)

Also have a BBQ plate that sits in carrier under the front under the sump. It can be put away hot and greasy and also doubles as sand base plate for jacking etc.

Have a second battery to run fridge etc

Have compressor (Big Red) which fits between the original battery and the grill. It is bolted down to a piece of 5ply which is trapped under the battery and sticks out towards the front of the vehicle.

Almost 300000 on the clock and going strong. Don't mess with timing belts - change them when due.

Plus I also have dozen stone chips in the windscreen and a few dings and scratches in the body. These may not improve it but show that it has been used and not any suburban status symbol.

Enjoy your 80 series and go see the real Australia!!!!!!
