Forumites,
I was reading Bob on Patrol's issues with his lost six months, for me don't I wish. The background search on my Patrol left a bit more than six months unaccounted for, anyway it's still going and as far as I know the only major bit that's had repairs is the gearbox, I suspect fifth gear, I only suspect this due to the evidence I can see underneath.
Anyway that wasn't my querie, I was more interested in the bonnet protector comment, and how the deflector does just that and deflects the air past the air scoop on the bonnet and not into it. I wondered about this seeing the rain blowing up the bonnet pattern changed significantly after I fitted the bonnet protector. I assumed (more fool me) that if Nissan supplied the protector that this would be OK, if I bought the accessory from SuperCheap or some such outlet, "you pays you money you takes your chance" sort of comes into play.
So does the protector deflect enough wind to compromise the efficiency of the intercooler or not?
Thanks in advance to people who respond, thanks for any constructive comments.

Hi Martyn,
My uneducated opinion is yes the protector would deflect enough air to compromise the efficiency of the intercooler. I think the scoop is not tall enough to be hugely efficient to begin with, so add something else to deflect more cool air away from the scoop and to me it has to make a detrimental difference.
A couple of dyno runs would settle the argument, one with the bonnet scoop on and one with a fan on top of intercooler and no bonnet scoop. Power outputs would not lie to you.
Good luck proving it to Mr Nissan though.
Regards, Trevor.

Martyn, I have a feeling that way back in 98 when they introduced the 2.8 with the bonnet scoop that Nissan were recommending that bonnet protectors should not be fitted as it interferes with the airflow over the intercooler.

The advice I was given that the original design is not very efficient (scoopr is not tall enough) and adding the bonnet protector only makes the situation worse. The mechanics who did my mod said they had done a test once and under the right conditions ( don't know what they are) they have seen air flow out of the scoop rather than into it. Even ignoring this comment, I have had a bonnet protector on my patrol since I bought it and only noticed the behaviour of
water on the bonnet after it was pointed out to me. At 110kph
water was not being blown away as you would expect but rather it was beading on the bonnet. Seeing this and realising that no bonnet scoop is going to catch much air at low speeds I decided to install the intercooler fan which pumps air into the intercooler all the time when the engine is running. It is not a thermo fan, it is on all the tme. Better to keep things cool than wait untill things get to hot.

Martyn,
If the bonnet protector is an issue I have a very inefficient inter-cooler as the ARB/Nissan steel bull bar is at least 3/4" higher than the protector.
Also noted the 2.8 had a fan associated with the inter-cooler. The 3Litre does not ????

G'day martin,
The effect of the bonnet protector is more than compensated for by fitting the 2.8 patrol fan or a 2.8td pajero fan. The pajero one should come with a thermatic switch so it only comes on when it get's hot and I would say that if it's got a few kay's on the clock, the gearbox has been removed to install a new clutch.
Hope this helps,
