GPS handhelds, which to purchase?

Submitted: Wednesday, Mar 05, 2003 at 16:47

Ross Malcolm Ireland

My Etrex died. Now I'm confused as to what to purchase. The Emap sounds similar to what I had but with some additional outlay can have its' maps significantly improved. The Meridian also sounds suitable with a map upgrade. Does anyone have recent purchasing experience. Does anyone have suggestions as to purchasing of external aerials, cigarette lighter power cables and/or connections to personal computers?

Accessories are cheaper in the USA, its actually cheaper to buy the lot there and import it... around 40-50% cheaper on a magellan meridian platinum with all the accessories.

If you wish to try the US then a reputable electronics in California with good prices is FRYs. They have an online purchase called outpost.
See http://www.outpost.com . They have abig list and the Etrac is about $US 119. before tax and shipping.

If you get a mapping GPS, the basemap won't be a big help in the bush - you need a street level map.

The only street level maps you can load on a Magellan mapping GPS (e.g. Meridian Gold, SporTrak Pro) are Magellan's own Mapsend. They sell each State on a separate CD - about $135. Look on eBay for second hand ones - they go for about $90-$100.

Magellan are going to publish new Hema Great Desert Treks maps for their GPSs soon.
