Try the new GME610 it has one watt output unlike all the rest with half a watt output. They have a Nicad rechargeable battery available. Price about $130.

Its me again, how did the Tx3200 install go?
I am in the communication business and would recommend you first decide what range you require and how much you wish to spend.
At just under $500.00 you have GME 's TX6000 and Icoms IC40s, both good units capable of 5watts output and slow charging via cig adapter.I believe both rapid desk chargers will operate at vehicle voltage also (Icom definite GME ?).
Cheap low power units range rom APPROX $80 to over $200 for an Icom 1c40JR and would give good service with alkerline batteries.
If run off rechargable nicads expect almost have the operating times stated unless high powered cells are used you would also need to investigate the different charging rates.
Good Luck

PS Icom units are semi waterproof and dust proof which may be an advantage.

The ICOM IC40S fast charger is powered by 12 volts from 240to12V transformer. Unplug the transformer lead and plug in a lead direct to the cig lighter and you have 12V fast charge in the car. The plug is available at Dick Smith and is not expensive.

Installation went well thanks bob. I put the 3200 in the map tray above the sun visor then ran the cables down the A post. I conected it to the fuse box in the dash, where there is a spare relay spot. I can change it between Accesorie or battery.

The handheld only needs a few ks range. Its so I can talk to my wife when she is a the car and Im off fishing somewhere. SO nothing to flash is required. All I really need is a basic unit, which I can recharge on 12V......

The other option is to get the NiCd/NiMH charger from jaycar that runs from 12 volt input, then you can use any of the cheap and nasty radios (as long as you don't need much range).

I only ever charge my TX6000 in the car, but quality comes at a price.
