Help!...Big problem....need to replace GQ ring gear !

IAMGQ

What a bad day! First time cannot start engine since bought it couple months ago. Start seems turning but can't crank engine. Ask the 4WD Shop in Frankston. He kindly told me that just put it in fifth and rock it back and forth then put it back neutral and start again. It did start sucessfully. It can be started everytime since then. Is it a common problem for GQ ? Anyway he told me that I got worn ring gear and need to be replace. I need to buy a genuine one. So total cost to fix may be $1000 plus ! OH no.......... I am so disappointed as I really thought it is unbreakable when comparing with my old pajero.........what should I do now.....fix it or leave it ???????????

My truck is : 93 TD42 336000km

With 336000kms you cannot blame the vehicle!!!!!

It is a problem that affects all cars not only Patrols, but it may have had to do with the starter motor.

Check your starter motor pinion first, it wears much quicker than the ring gear.

If the starter motor pinion is OK then you will have to change the rin gear.

Al engines stop in the same spot all the time four different places on the ring gear but always in the same spot within those spots, which tends to wear the ring gear, that is why putting it into fith and rocking it works, moves it out of that spot...
You can get one from the wreckers or just remove and turn yours over
Done it many times.

Thank you so much Will! I have just learnt a good lesson from you.
As I don't have enough tools and experience at home, I may not do it myself to replace the ring gear.

The mechanic charge me $600 to do the job exclude the parts. Is it a reasonble price if the problem really came from ring gear but not the pinion on startor ?

Agree, check your starter motor first. That is the lamb so to speak and it will always go first. Nothing to lose by doing it, you may be lucky.

Thanks Sensei!
If after inspecting the stater and find the pinion is worn, can I get it rebuild or get a whole new one ?

Since your local to here, try Alan at Outback in Hartnett dr Seaford. He is a GQ owner too. Tell him Bruce pointed you in his direction...

I too would be happy with 336,000klms out of one!

You dont buy a car with that many klms on it, and not have problems... Toy, Missan, Subi, Lrover, Mitz, etc they all have wear limits... 10 yrs and 336k klms, thats not bad...

I do know a bloke wrecking one in Ferntree gully.. Could call him, the one Dave Turner postedf on patrol list the SHorty that was rolled, its a TD42, but wants $4000 for the engine, but he now wants to clear it all out, he has G/box there too...

Thanks Bruce................
You are always helpful to anything....This site cannot without you anytime.
I have been to Alan for few times. From conversation, I don't know whether he know very well in Patrol or just like some mechanic only know "Patrol is a 4wd"
So from what you suggest, he should be reliable, right ? I like to talk to mechanic who speak same language "PATROLISH"
I will go there later and ask him about this...........thanks!
By the way, do you know if he want to put on any apprentice ? I am looking for a 4wd apprenticeship, hope he can help.

Gearbox has to come out - so $650 isn't too bad if you're not gonna do the job yourself.....

It's not hard to replace the flywheel with a second handy. Removing and refitting ringgear is a damn hard job though.

I was at local Nissan dealer Saturday.

Sitting on the hoist, was a very nice looking Patrol, with no underbody damage, in other words did not look like it had been harsh treated.

Flywheel was out, because the entire centre had pulled out of the rest of the flywheel, I asked the serviceman, was this a common fault, NO! but he had seen it happen before.

If you are changing the ring gear, I suggest you get the bolt up flange section crack tetsted, may save you heartache later on.
