hi ya all= just want to get a bit of a idea of the cost to get the output shaft and gear replaced in my cruisers r151f gearbox.

ive been quoted $1600 to $1800 from 1 mechanic and $2650 from another mechanic.
id like to hear what sort of coin it has cost other people that have had it done and weather you just got the shaft done or went for the full rebuild.

i havent been getting any metal in the oils, but are heading off around the state in the next few weeks and want to get it done b4 we go.

if the full rebuild is the go, would it be cheaper to buy a new box.

the cruiser has done 110,000kms.

thanks all.

Hi Lost, To get the new shaft in all they have to strip is the t-case and pop the shaft in the back of the gearbox, replace the gaskets and seals and and reassemble the t-case. About a 6hr job, price? I work in the mines in WA and only had 1 fail in 2 years out of 100 utes and they are given a very hard time, If you go for a NEW gearbox the shaft does not come with it, you will have to still buy the shaft. Hope this helps.

Confusion, is the input shaft or output shaft causing the problems ?

Lost,
I met a guy with a 2001 troopy and his shaft stripped at 117000km.He got it repaired at Robson Brothers in Perth. His repair bill was$368 for parts and $568 for labour which sounds a lot more realistic to what you have been quoted.Toyota in Kununnura were charging$1200 for the job 2years ago, Hope this helps and Iam thinking of getting my troopy done before my next trip as it has done 140000km.

Hi,

These parts are likely to be quite a bit cheaper than the Toyota bits. Also, I suspect that Toyota's upgraded gear does not include the power takeoff gear so it engages an extra 28 mm of spline rather than an extra 56 mm as is the case for the above parts. Does anyone know for sure?

Cheers Frank.

Hi Frank, the shafts in your link are for the older gearbox that is in 60 and 75 series toyota. If you use the modified gear you can still use the PTO gear as normal, all you do is leave out the orignal spacer between the two gears.

Common for these boxes to do 3rd gear, especially if you have powered up or have added weight or bigger tyres....best fix is to fit a diesel 80 series gearbox, plenty about secondhand, as they are not a big seller... you need the transfer with it, they are indestructable, dont know why yota went for the prado box in the 105....and 78/9 1hz. The factory turbo 78/9/100 box is one of these 80 boxes...
