Hi Lost,
I have an 80 series with 1HZ engine that has done 298,000km with a Mike Vine Turbo fitted.
Neither motor nor turbo have ever been touched except for ususal
servicing of injectors and pump etc...so I am happy with reliability.
Your fuel consumption will go up especially when towing but it is great to be able to overtake without stressing that you won't make it. Normal running around empty I get 13L/100km with roof rack,
snorkel and other things that have affected aerodynamics. On highway towing it can go up to 18L/100km with 3000kg load on a big square tandem trailer. Before turbo was fitted it seemed to just get 11-12L/100km whatever I did.
Make sure your cooling system is 100% and consider taking extra measures such as larger capacity radiator etc. just in case.
My motor has only ever been hot once and that was 2 weeks ago when but it turned out to be the viscous fan hub working intermittently. Replaced with a new one and no problem since.
I would recommend capping the boost of your turbo at 8psi as I have heard reports of 1HZ's having problems from high boost pressures. That is also why I have not gone for the big 3" mandrel bent exhaust that everyone talks about as the exhaust itself acts a boost limiter preventing excessive boost pressures in some ways.
If i were to do it all again I would first consider the diesel/gas conversion now and see if the claimed power increase was sufficient for my needs.
Good luck with your decision,
Brett

Hi Lost,
Based on the research i have done it should only take me 20,000km to pay back the $2000 I would have to pay after deducting the Gov. rebate but that is using my current fuel consumption fiures of towing my yacht which weighs about 2500kg empty. As I am planning a trip from
Bundaberg to
Victoria and another next year to
Cooktown towing all the way it should pay for itself in those 2 trips alone.
I think it would probably take much longer than that to recoup costs when fitted to a N/A diesel. I have also heard that the power increase is more significant on a T/D than it is on a N/A diesel.
Although i have spoken to 3 blokes now who have had the conversion including TJM in
Brisbane I guess it is still a gamble as to the amount of benefit if any as each 4wd is different and so is each driver so there are always a lot of variables that will affect figures. I think I will sit another 6 months or so and let the conversions get some k's up on them and then weigh up all the
feedback. The rebate will still be around then.
At the end of the day a 1HZ Landcruiser fitted with an aftermarket turbo is a proven and I agree with the other posts saying that you will never look back. It does totally change the vehicle to drive. Toyota also don't seem to have quite the overheating issues of a Nissan when fitted with aftermarket turbo's so I wouldn't be too concerned about temperature.
Cheers,
Brett
